    Meena Kumari (Biography)
    Author : Vinod Mehta

Munpu eppole Pakeezah kurachu kandathu ozhichal ...never seen any of Meena Kumari films . Film actors bio edukunathinte main intention ....to know more about the things that we would not be aware as viewers ...like how a particular film was made...discussions related to characters , scripts ...incidents from the location etc etc ....

Despite the fact that this lady was a unique personality I ended up admiring the author Vinod Mehta more !! Nalla quality ulla language ...beautiful narration ...I just loved that craft he formed for this bio and mind you he wrote this in 70ies when he was still in the initial stage as a journalist.

The book definitely helps to give you a better insight on the life Meena Kumari ...she was much more than the quintessential tragedienneof Hindi cinema.
Also the work behind the classic Pakeezah makes it worth a read .

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer - Siddhartha Mukherjee
    - 2011 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-fiction

Excellent. Mind-blowing. Well-researched. Blew my bloody cells off.

Cancer is not a modern disease. It might probably be the oldest disease in the world. The oldest mention of the disease is in 2625 BC (thats 4600 years ago). Egyptian physician Imhotep recorded 48 of his most intriguing cases. All cases have symptoms and remedies except for Case No. 45, symptom: bulging mass in the breast spreading insidiously under her skin and remedy: none.

440 BC has Histories written by Greek author Herodotus mentioning about a ?swollen lump? being removed from the breast of Persian queen Atossa, wife of King Darius. Hippocrates used karkinos (Greek word for crab) to describe a tumor which seemed like a crab dug in sand.

160 AD has Greek physician Claudius Galen classifying all root cause of human diseases in 4 fluids: inflammation due to (red) blood, tuberculosis and pustules due to (green) phlegm, jaundice due to (yellow) bile and finally cancer and depression due to the most vile and dangerous (black) bile. Cancer was then considered to be best left untreated since patients live longer that way.

15th century had Brussels medical student Andreas Vesalius, with help of bodies dug from graveyards and with help of sketch artists, come up with the first anatomical atlas though he was disappointed he couldn't find Galen's (black) bile anywhere in the bodies.

17th century saw all sorts of remedies for cancer: for the hard-hearted there was burning the tumors with soldering iron heated on hot coals; for the mild-hearted ones there was boar's tooth, fox lungs, crab's eyes. The era before anesthesia and antibiotics led to almost all surgeries ending up in disasters.

If cancer was probably the oldest disease, why did it come to the forefront only from the 18th century. Two reasons. One, cancer evolves with age. The rise in life expectancy (from 40's and 50's before 17th century to 70's and 80's in the next) gave rise to cancer. Second, unlike tuberculosis, malaria, plague, pneumonia or any of the other mass destructive diseases which show symptoms right from the start, cancer was a silent one, bursting out only at the last moment. Cancer was always there from the beginning but people died sooner of other diseases that it never gave the ultimate villain a chance to come up on stage for his 'final' act.

18th century saw cancer classified into two: movable and immovable. Movable ones underwent surgery, immovable ones underwent sympathy. In 1838, Rudolf Virchow noted that humans were made up of cells meaning growth could occur only in 2 ways: hyperplasia (increasing cell numbers as in liver, blood and skin) or hypertrophy (increasing cell size as in fat and muscle). Cancer could be termed as pathological hyperplasia.

1846 saw the discovery of anesthesia and 1865 the discovery of antibiotic.

1880 saw William Halsted introduced 'radical mastectomy' - cancer was treated by cutting further and further inside. So radical that he and his disciples would rather take out every organ from the body rather than be faced with recurrence. This left patients permanently disfigured and still cancer would come back.

1895 saw the discovery of X-ray and the notion of treating cancer with its rays.

1902 saw Curie couple discover radium which was powerful enough to attack the DNA but sometimes it would attack the good cells too.

Meanwhile, synthetic chemistry underwent a bloom in colonial cloth-mills (Bombay including). Chemists began to synthesize a whole new world of molecules. It was a German medical student Paul Ehlrich who first wondered whether chemicals could be used to attack cancer (the beginning of chemotherapy).

World War 1 saw chemical warfare. Pathologists discovered that mustard gas had the ability to attack the bone marrow, only the bone marrow, meaning chemicals could be used to attack specific organs.

Pediatric pathologist Sydney Farber alongwith Indian cellular physiologist Subbarao discovered that cancer progression, especially in leukemia, could be counted which was a breakthrough.

And so on... and so on... slowly by slowly, frustratingly and painfully the last century saw scientists around the world discover many things: each form of cancer should have a therapy of its own, each stage of cancer should have a therapy of its own, cancer needed to be treated even years after every visible sign would have vanished; doctors who hated death as much as defeat, started to realize cancer was beyond their capabilities and started to care for the patients.

1958 saw Wilm's tumor become the first cancer to be cured.

1976 saw lung cancer become the first cancer to be cured by chemotherapy.

1980's saw America fight hard against the greatest marketing moguls of all time - tobacco giants who, through their ad campaigns pulled off almost impossible yet greatest selling act yet ever done - that of encouraging the working-class housewife to pick a cigarette and light it to calm her nerves.

1983 saw a new form of cancer - AIDS.

Yes, we might have come a long way from Halsted's radical mastectomy. Had it been practiced today, prostate cancer would have seen men have nothing between their legs. Cancer is a disease that might be just a 'distorted' version of ourselves because, unknowingly, we ourselves are the ones nurturing, nourishing and allowing malignant cells to roam around inside ourselves. And it ends up bringing out the best and worst in us.

Highly recommended. Heavy at 600 pages but should definitely be read by everyone once atleast in a lifetime.

    P.S.
It might scare you. It could frighten you. If not, it will definitely destruct in you a lot of notions.
About the world you are living in. About the food that you are eating. About the air that you are breathing. About the ego you harbor that you are beyond all diseases.
