    Unnatural exposure by Patricia Cornshell

    Medical thriller annu.
Dr Scarpetta is a chief medical officer in US. While she is dealing with serial killings in Virginia and Dublin , there is outbreak of a strange virus similar to small pox in the country and she along with other agencies is on a mission to find the culprit.

engaging read ...just the ending is a bit underwhelming

Evolving with subramaniam swamy vaayichu, written by his wife roxna
    The book is written well.
However inganthe authorized biography or autobiography swambhavikkunu pole sherikkum ithreyum mahaan aaya aalaano ennu vicharikkum.
Surprisingly harshest critisicsm in this book is reserved for vajpayee and arun jaitley. Indira gandhi is let off quite easily given the circumstances.
Main focus of book is emergency period and swamys exploits during that period.
A window is also opened to the privileged life of the ministers and beauracrats.
    Iverall a good book

Dreaming Big: My Journey to Connect India - Sam Pitroda
    330 pgs. Published in 2015.

First section is about his beginnings. Pitroda comes from the word ‘pitr’ meaning brass, denoting the blacksmith vishwakarma lower caste in the Brahminical hierarchy. Pitroda grandpa had a hard time in Gujarat, wedding off his three daughters had him in perennial debt. Pitroda father and family moved from Kutch to Titlagarh in Orissa. Local education, boarding school education in Gujarat till University level, then graduation in 1966 with masters in electrical engineering from Oregon University USA. Started off working for a company that manufactured television tuners, then later with Automatic Electric Company where he got immersed into the field of telecommunications. Analogue telephone switches were being replaced by digital ones and he started working on them. Started registering patents in his name ending up with starting his own company Wescom Inc. which manufactured all sorts of electronic equipment for the telephone industry. Long before outsourcing became a fashion, he had friends in Baroda manufacture the goods. The first Model 580 PBX was a huge hit with airlines, hospitals, government offices. Later sold his company making him a multi-millionaire by the age of 35. Having Indian friends over the weekend, conversation would turn to the pathetic state of Indian telephones – took a long time to get and then wouldn’t work properly. A visit to Delhi in 1980 made him witness a public funeral conducted for dead telephones down the highway. This was his Swades moment. Met with lots of progressive societies but nothing happened. Everywhere it was the yeh sab yahaan pe chaltha hai. Finally able to convince the tech-savvy Rajiv (who had just managed the highly impressive 1982 Asiad) and a timely article about Sam (Satyanarayam by birth, Sam by American standards) in Chicago Tribune gave him an opportunity to meet PM Indiraji. And she agrees to support his dream of connecting India.

Second section is about his desi dreams. With able support from Rajiv and various ministries dealing with telecommunications and electronics, C-DOT (Centre for the Development of Telematics) is formed. First develop small switches for rural villages (Gandhi being role model, India is alive in its villages) and then shift to large switches for urban cities. 36 millions dollars. 3 year project. Sam worked on a salary of a rupee-a-year. Indira’s death and 1984 rise of Rajiv as PM gave a huge boost. Training, seminars by Americans, teamwork etc. etc. Initial success with the arrival rural automatic exchange and the installation of STD/PCO red-color booths. Scientific Advisory to the PM. Launch of National Technology Missions dealing with immunization, water resource, dairy production, literacy, edible oils and telecommunications. The Mission was then recommended by the UN to be taken up by other countries. Launch of Telecom Commission and Chairman post. Blocked foreign companies from entering the market instead developed it indigenously. Launched C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) which comes out with PARAM, India’s first supercomputer in 1990. The Bofors was a setback though Sam claims the answer to his personal inquiry to Rajiv about it was, Sam, I have not taken a penny and neither my family’. The Janatha Party under VP Singh in order to malign Rajiv, saw telecom minister KP Unnikrishnan spread false allegations that Sam was a foreign citizen who had siphoned 23 million dollars. Comptroller General of Audit. KPP Nambiar Enquiry Committee. No evidence found. Sam lets go of his American citizenship. Fall of National Front. Chandrasekhar, the new PM supported by Congress was supportive. Sam became part of Rajiv’s election campaign and worked on advertisements. Everything seemed going well when Rajiv gets assassinated. Headed back to Chicago where he finds a 1974 patent of his had been developed into the electronic diary. Suing Toshiba, Casio, Sharp and HP resulted finally in a settlement case worth millions.

Third section is about rebuilding. PM Narasimha Rao calls him back. Economic liberalization under Manmohan Singh. Internet boom. Launch to build nationwide fibre-optics network. Computerisation of railway reservations. PM Manmohan Singh’s launch of world’s first National Knowledge Commission linking universities with colleges and classrooms. Improvement to vocational education. Opening up India to mobile telephony. Digital India was booming. As Advisor to PM, Sam was a part of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, National Optical Fibre Network, Unique Identification Number which later became Aadhaar, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping. Corruption charges, incumbency and image of dynasty rule made BJP come to power, which made Sam leave the field again.

A must-read book. Both as an inspirational memoir and as a management guide to running things in India.
