Nadal aims to follow federer's lead
Rafael Nadal was today aiming to follow in Roger Federer's footsteps and book his place in the second round of Wimbledon. But the French Open champion was expecting a far tougher time than Federer experienced as he faced American Mardy Fish in the opening round at the All England Club.Nadal beat Fish 7-6 6-1 on grass at Queen's last year, but the big-serving American is a dangerous opponent on the surface, twice reaching the finals of grass-court tournaments."He's a very good player, especially on fast surfaces," Nadal acknowledged."He has a very good serve, good volley. It's going to be a very, very tough match."It is not the best first round, no? It is very difficult, I know that. I can just go on court with my 100%."Nadal and Fish face-off in the second match on Centre Court, where Federer yesterday extended his winning streak on grass to 49 matches.
The Swiss star, seeking to equal Bjorn Borg's modern-day record with a fifth straight title, had few problems against Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili, winning 6-3 6-2 6-4 in just 92 minutes."I was pretty pleased with my performance," Federer said. "I think it was solid. I was very concentrated on my own service games, trying to get those through, then hopefully put pressure on my opponent.
"It worked out. I think he also played a decent match, I had to come up with some shots once in a while."
