    Federer withdraws from Halle!
    Dear fans

In an attempt to prevent injury after the long final in Paris, I cannot defend my title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. Gerry and Ralf Weber have always been so hospitable over the years and I love playing there. I look forward to returning in 2008.

    Kind regards
    Roger

    Wimbledon Championships starts from today!

Welcome to the 121st Championships - a work in progress. For the duration of the Wimbledon Fortnight, the cranes and assorted building materials which are in the process of putting together the all-weather roof, have been set aside. Hard hats will not be available, except as an option for those stationed on the other side of the net from Ivo Karlovic and Andy Roddick's service actions.

This tournament will not be completely in the dry for two more summers, so it was perhaps to be expected that rattling the bars of Jupiter Pluvius' cage might be a risky venture, with Centre Court completely bared to the elements. Right on schedule, those elements seem to have taken a turn for the worse. Let's hope it is temporary.
In keeping with Wimbledon tradition, the opener on that wide-open Centre Court will feature the champion, Roger Federer, who has reigned for so long now, four straight years, that he is entitled to possession of a season ticket, if not a permanent pass, to the place he rightly regards as his second home after Switzerland.

The unfortunate folk whose task it is to march out alongside the champion to get things under way can occasionally be excused the body language of someone who has arrived on the premises by tumbril rather than courtesy car. It is a bleak task, which rarely goes awry. Only twice post-war, in fact, on the men's side, most recently in 2003 when Lleyton Hewitt was bombarded to a standstill by the aforementioned Karlovic. You had to feel sympathy for the feisty little Australian, since the 6ft 10in Karlovic's service toss was probably hidden in low cloud.

Federer's appointed victim, sorry, opponent, cannot boast such stature, though at 6ft 2in the exotically-named Teimuraz Gabashvili does not struggle to peer over garden walls in his native Russia. Where he does currently struggle, alas, is in the winning of tennis matches. He arrives here on the back of seven consecutive first round exits, stretching back to April, and a ranking of 85.
This is the Wimbledon debut of Gabashvili, whose nickname is Tsunami ("because he is very nervous on court" it says in his official biog). Federer is a kindly fellow, but you can't see any other outcome here than Tsunami being swept away on a tide of top-level tennis.
Federer, quite a builder himself on this elegant building site, has constructed an unbeaten Wimbledon run of 28 and a streak of 48 matches on grass. Bjorn Borg, whose record of five straight Wimbledons Federer is hoping to emulate over the next fortnight, remains the top man at these Championships with 41 victories in succession.
Roddick, whose booming serve swept him to a fourth Artois Championship at Queen's Club nine days ago, is entitled to be of good heart, though when the numbered balls came out of the velvet bag at last Friday's draw, his name as third seed fell into Federer's half. So no prospective final, then, between these two, as happened in 2004 and again in 2005...
