Default Ganagandharvan Special- Gandharva Naada Pravahathinu 50 Vayasu..

When we fight over Mohanlal and Mammoty.....we fail to recognise someone even higher than them....So high, that he has been ruling the Malayalam Music Industry for the last 4 decades, giving us tens of thousands of songs for us to cheer, weep and enjoy. No Malayalam singer can even come close to him. He is...

    Dr K.J. Y E S U D A S.

A true legend of Malayalam Music. A truly dedicated singer, who we hear every day in one song or another.

    Nammude Ganagandharvan

Who is (Padmashree)Dr. Kattassery Joseph Yesudas?

One of the greatest South Indian musicians of all times, was born in Fort Cochin, Kerala, India. His father Mr. Augustine Joseph Bagavathor, was a well known malayalam classical musician and stage actor of his time . His mother, Mrs. Alikkutty Joseph, devoted her time and energy in bringing up her children. In his childhood Yesudas had to face a great deal of hardships because of the meager financial resources of his parents. His father could recognize the boy’s musical talent at a very young age and decided to provide him musical education at any cost. Augustine Bhagavathor himself was his first music Guru. The boy was taught the fundamentals of Carnatic music at the tender age of five. Indian music world soon began to witness the appearance of a new bright star in the horizon. Later several music teachers in and around Cochin gave him valuable guidance he was seeking. It is his passion for music, hard work and dedication that created the musical legend we call Yesudas or more intimately "Dasettan".

Music came as divine grace and paternal inheritance to K.J.Yesudas, one of India’s foremost exponents of classical carnatic vocal music and leading playback singer in all-Indian languages. His classical concerts and film songs programs continue to captivate millions of listeners at home and abroad.

Kattassery Joseph Yesudas was born on January 10, 1940 in Fort Cochin, the ancient port city of Kerala. His father, Augustine Joseph was himself a well-known singer and stage actor who rode the Kerala stage like a colossus for over a quarter of a century. Eldest of the four sons and one daughter of the Joseph couple, Yesudas took to music at a very early age. His first Guru was his beloved father himself, who lovingly and painstakingly led little Yesudas through the basic precepts of Carnatic Music while he was hardly five years old. From there, the budding singer took lessons under several musical wizards in and around Cochin and nurtured his native talents with discipline, dedication and determination.

Yesudas is a reciepent of the Padmabhushan Award from the president of India and progress each day towards achieving musical knowledge through Classical Indian Music, Carnatic Music, Challenging Film and Independent compositions.

    Role Models:

Shri.Narayana Guru’s great message, "One caste, One Religion and One God for all Humans", influenced young Yesudas in his dealings with his fellow men. He has already sung more than 30,000 songs for thousands of Indian films in various languages. An institution called K J Yesudas

    By Pradeep

Padmashree K J Yesudas, one of the best known Indian singers, who gave his sweat and blood for music turned sixty on January 10. Here's a rendezvous with the ace singer.

There is one voice that the Malayalee, world over, recognises. It is a voice that has become part of the collective memory of the Malayalee. It wafts in the wind, hauntingly; ushering in memories both happy and gloomy, of the land the Malayalee calls his own. K J Yesudas is Kerala's very own voice.

And after recording over 40,000 songs and winning scores of accolades including the coveted Padmashree honour and seven national awards for the best playback singer, Malayalam's very own Gana Gandharvan (the divine singer) is still breathing music and enchanting music lovers the world over.

The hallmark of this gifted singer has been his ability to defeat a hostile environment; a propensity for hard work and a never-ending quest for excellence in a field that he has turned his own. He has been able to achieve this discipline as he had a mission in life, a dream to fulfill.

His father, the noted stage actor-singer of yesteryears, Augustine Joseph, was determined to turn his eldest son into a singer. He spared no efforts in doing so. There was a time when Augustine Joseph was the toast of the town. His house at Thoppumpady in Kochi was literally filled with friends and fans, who spent the day eating and talking. But when the man fell on bad days there were very few to extend a helping hand.

Young Yesudas grew up in penury, but there was this goal that he had set for himself. There was his father's dream that he knew he had to fulfill. When he was taunted and scoffed at for being a Christian and attempting to learn Carnatic music, when he was almost chucked out of the RLV Music Academy for defaulting on the monthly fees, when he was asked to sleep in the car shed of an eminent musician, when he had to travel miles in Chennai living mainly on tap water when music directors initially found him ineffective and then, when AIR, Trivandrum considered his voice not good for broadcasting - Yesudas suffered patiently. All these only acted as catalysts that sparked off his long cherished dream.

All that the young singer needed was a break. And this he got through divine intervention. Director K S Antony needed a new male voice and the choice was Vaikkom Chandran. But the noted stage singer suggested the name of the upcoming singer, who was by then making a mark through his ganamelas. The film `Kalpaddukal' in 1961 saw the birth of a new voice. The few lines composed by Narayana Guru ironically expounded his life's policy of ``one caste, one religion, one God''. The rest is history.

A phenomenon in South Indian film music, Yesudas has overcome language barriers and sung over 40,000 songs in a career spanning nearly four decades.Yesudas' classical style has often come in for harsh criticism. There are many purists who consider his style neither Carnatic nor Hindustani. But once again, through sheer perseverance and hard work he went on to prove his critics wrong. Every year he prepared diligently before the Madras concerts, singing elaborate pallavis and rare ragas. But the truth is that Yesudas has been greatly instrumental in popularising Carnatic music.

Yesudas got his first recognition at the tender age of seven, when he won a gold medal for music at a local competition in Fort Cochin. He got the prestigious national award for best playback singer seven times: Manushyan Mathangale Srishtichu (Achanum Bappayum-Malayalam) in 1972, Padmatheerthame (Gayatri-Malayalam) in 1973, Gori Tera (Chit Chor-Hindi) in 1979, Akashadeshamu (Meghasandesham-Telugu) in 1985, Unnikale Oru Kathaparayam (Unnikale Oru Kathaparayam-Malayalam) in 1987, Ramakatha Ganalayam (Bharatham-Malayalam) in 1991 and for songs in the film Sopanam in 1993. He has won the award for the best playback singer in Malayalam ever since its inception in 1969, except for seven times. (From 1987 to 1991 he had opted out of the race to facilitate opportunities for fresh talents). He picked up his 23rd state award last year.

The other major accolades India's ace singer received were - the best playback singer award in Tamil in 1988 and 1992, best playback singer award in Telugu in 1988, Sangeetha Raja Puraskaram in 1974, Sangeetha Chakravarthy Puraskaram in 1988, Sangeetha Sagaram Puraskaram in 1987, Lata Mangeshkar Award of the Madhya Pradesh government in 1992 and National Citizens' Award in 1994. Turning sixty this January 10, the voice that has brightened up the lives of millions all these years continues ageless and is bound to be heard for centuries to come.

Music is devotion for Yesudas and nothing mundane carries him away. When he made his debut in films way back in 1962, the recording process was simple and unsophisticated, though laborious. Imparting the needed feeling to the lines in the presence of the music director and other film technicians was comparatively easy. With recording going hi-tech and track recording turning out to be the order of the day, 'emotion' usually became the causality. But this was not the case with Yesudas.

Even when recordings were done from his studios, set up at his residence in Florida, listening to just the track-recordings and with no clue of the story-line of the film, Yesudas was still able to breathe life into them, giving it the emotions that blend so well with the lyrics and most importantly, the scene itself. Some of the recent songs stand testimony to this quality, which none of the recent singers have been able to imbibe.

It was the late Salil Choudhary who provided the break for Yesudas in Hindi films in 1976. His first venture Anand Mahal was not a big box-office hit though the Yesudas-Sabita number Aa Aa Re Mitwa... was noticed. It was the film Chit Chor under Ravindra Jain that really launched Yesudas in Hindi films.

"Sing with your voice and with your heart and with all your moral convictions. Sing the new songs, not only with your tongue but with your life," says Yesudas.

Yesudas has dedicated his life for peace and harmony in Kerala, in India and in the world. Yesudas became a Senate member in the International Parliament for Safety and Peace, an organization in the U.S. In 1965, he was invited by the Russian Government to perform as a cultural delegate in various parts of Russia; he sang a Russian song over Radio Kazakhstan, which was widely appreciated by local fans.

In 1965, when Pakistan and India war broke out he sang in various centers to raise funds for the war efforts. Again in 1971, when the war over Bangladesh broke out, he took to the streets in an open truck and traversed the entire length and breadth of Kerala collecting funds to help the nation, to tie over the crisis. A large sum of money was thus collected. Yesudas later presented the money to Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister at a special function in New Delhi. Mrs. Indira Gandhi congratulated and thanked the singer for taking the message of India's integrity and national pride to the people. On the street K. J. Yesudas through his singing brought the sentiments of the people of Kerala to the capital in the form of their collective contribution towards war chest. (proud of you Dasetta )

Yesudas helps raise funds for the children and the poor. The Heart and Hand for the Handicapped, a voluntary organization that helps disabled children, held its annual fund-raiser at the Hindu Temple in Flushing on Nov 14,1998. The President of the organization, B.R. Ramprasad, told India in New York that $80,000 was collected in a three hour concert.

Yesudas influence in the Indian world led his voice to reach other Indians abroad and so he started his journey to other nations to enchant the Indian community abroad with his music and the remembrance of Indian Arts.

At the St. Sebastian's High School, Pallurthi, Cochin, Yesudas was the top singer for several consecutive years. In 1957, he stood first in the state level, school youth festival in Carnatic vocal singing. In 1958,he was the recipient of gold medal in vocal singing at the all Kerala Catholic Youth Festival held at Ernakulam.

After school, Yesudas joined R.L.V.Music Academy, Thrippoonithura near Cochin for the Ganabhooshanam course which he completed with a double promotion and distinction in 1960. Meanwhile, the young singer joined the Sree Swathithirunal Music Academy, Trivandrum, for higher studies. But he could not complete the course due to financial problems at home.

On 14th November 1961 Yesudas recorded his voice for the first time for him. It was a verse written by Sri.Narayana Guru, the sage of the backward classes of Kerala. The lyrics of the simple song conveyed a great meaning. It read: "This is a model place where all the people live like brothers and sisters, unaffected by the difference of caste and the enmities of religion". Truly a message in national integration, For Yesudas, for Kerala and for India, it was an auspicious day and an auspicious beginning.

Offers started pouring in after the release of a few more film songs and K.J.Yesudas never looked back after that. He became the favorite of the elderly, darling of the middle aged, craze among the youth and singing idol of the teen-age generation. All India Radio, which once refused to recognize his talents, started playing his records day in and day out. Sales of his long play records created new records, every time they were released to the public. He was invited to give concerts of film songs in every town and village of Kerala and also in every city and town in every part of India and overseas. He has performed in almost every major city in the world and has sung in many languages of Indian and foreign.

How do you think Yesudas has evolved as a singer since the 1960s to the 2000s....and has still gone strong even after 4 decades? Would like to hear your replies.
