When sun rose in East today, Secret Superstar was just outside Top 50 Overseas Grossers in our database. Dangal was biggest Indian Opener in China. Fast forward some 20 odd hours, both of them, Not anymore. While Secret Superstar is now 21st Biggest Grosser in Overseas, Dangal opening day record is destroyed by margin. And mind the word MARGIN. Secret Superstar almost three folded Dangal’s opening day, grossing $6.2 million or ?40 million or ₹40 crore on Friday in China. China Opening day is almost 7 times of what film did in India and that's just start to the hell of journey which is looking like will go to $200 million or higher this time.
While writing this preview article yesterday, I was certain of a big opening day and film landed on higher end of my expectations. Now to move a little forward, we are probably looking at $27-30 million weekend here. With that, Dangal and Coco are no longer comparisons for the film as they opened basically half or lower. So it will be on Monday when it will be clear where this film will go in Lifetime.
But let's just focus on implications of this $27-30mn weekend as far as other Indian films and box office reporting is concerned. Film will be fourth biggest overseas grosser of all time by Sunday just behind Dangal, Baahubali: The Conclusion and P.K. It will be 3rd Biggest 2017 released Indian film Globally edging it's fellow Diwali release Golmaal Again. Just a few more days it will be only behind Baahubali 2 and who knows if it earn $240 million in Middle Kingdom to even cross that.
