Muddled Mannerisms

Movie - Peruchazhi

Review
------------
Director Arun Vaidyanathan's Mohanlal starrer 'Peruchazhi', which opens today, carries the freshness of a new premise. It strives to live on the nostalgia created by the 'mannerisms' of the great actor Mohanlal, in his various movies over the years which now have a cult status. But does the movie rise beyond that to become a watchable entertainer? The answer sadly would be a 'No'.
The first 30-40 minutes of 'Peruchazhi' are the best portions of the movie. So revel and enjoy as long as that lasts. From the famous Mohanlal dialogues in the title to the scenes, which he relives the olden movies, it looks as a snowball gathering mass. With much anticipation, Jagannathan (Lal) and team arrive in the US to direct the campaign for the California State Governor elections. From then on, to mention exactly from the racial spats which Jagannathan triggers, the movie starts taking a leap downwards.
The makers expect the audience to switch off the logic along with mobiles at the beginning of the credit,so one is not at all taking the movie prudently. But even then the script just meanders here and there while you eagerly wait for the interval to arrive. The songs are a big let down and the lyrics needs special mention in being a huge blip. At Interval, you may feel 'Average' at best.
Post interval, there is no much respite. There are few one liners and funny situations scattered far in between. But the movie just fails to interest in these portions. If the Lalisms saved some grace in the first half, the second half gets confused between elections, romance, revenge, kerala politics, satire and more. There is also a patience testing 'item song' thrown in which is sure to break your nerves.
By the end, there is revenge, twist and a happy ending but one may find not caring much for all this mayhem. Direction seems promising only in parts while rest of it looks confused. It ends up almost looking like a Tamil movie to say the least. Of the performances, its Mohanlal who can make you watch the movie even if you don’t feel interested in it. Baburaj and Aju play the supporting roles adequately, while Vijay Babu does the usual.
'Peruchazhi' had almost everything going for it. From the premises, to setting, to the interest and the big one- The Lalisms. But it fails to make a good entertainer, even if you keep the logic completely out of it. Keep your expectations real low. It may save the depth of your disappointment.
