Review
-------------
For starters, Director Ranjith Sankar's new movie 'Varsham' is not about a Tragedy. Its about a Triumph. Triumph that rises from a Tragedy. While the later just lingers on in the background, the former creates meaning to it. 'Varsham' creates that potent mix.
The movie is about a small time finance company owner from Thrissur, Venu. He has a normal life which is simple and usual. He is jealous, stingy, competitive - all as usual. The center of his universe is his son, on whom his dreams and plans are set. The initial portions of the movie establish these facets and then a tragedy occurs in his life. From then on he is crest fallen, broken, maverick and inconsolable. How he rises from the ashes like a phoenix and turns his biggest tragedy in to his biggest triumph is what 'Varsham' is all about.
First half until Venu's tragedy is decently done. The jealousy episodes with Dr.Omana (Sajitha Madathil) are a bit tedious. But the scenes between father and son compensate for that. Slowly the premise gets established and then the incident. Post that you are engrossed to see how Venu reacts and takes to it. By the Interval, one would feel for him and also know what his way forward is. Post Interval proceedings keep on an even pace. There are some points at which the movie dips, takes some artificial routes and looks compulsive but Venu's tryst will keep you hooked. His triumph by the end is yours.
The big winners of 'Varsham' are Mammotty and Ranjith Sankar. Mammotty blazes and burns the screen with his best performance in some time. Its heartening to see him as honest, involved in even usual scenes at home. Looks natural. Emotional scenes are his forte. Watch out for the scene with 'holy water'. By the end, Mammotty makes 'Venu' one of his memorable performances. Ranjith Sankar comes off age in 'Varsham'. From choice of the theme, soulful presentation, deftness in execution and getting the best out of his cast, the director makes an indelible mark. His writing creates the much needed gusto wherever the movie takes a dip.
Cinematography by Manoj Pillai is warm and stays with the movie. Editing by Sagar Das is neat. Bijibal deserves kudos for the songs and background score. Asha Sarath delivers a solid performance as Venu's wife 'Nandini'. Mamta Mohandas, Sudheer Karamana, TG Ravi, Prajwal all have put in competent performances.
'Varsham' is a story to be told. 'Varsham' is a movie to be made and watched by multitudes. Because day in and day out tragedies may be waiting to happen around us. And what we need is Hope. Hope that many such tragedies will turn in to personal Triumphs. Hence, 'Varsham' is precious!
Rating - 3.5/5
