The Silver Owl

Review
---------
There is this hilarious scene in Debutant director Jibu Jacob's new movie 'Vellimoonga' (Silver Owl) in which Pachan (played by Aju Varghese) on his maiden visit to New Delhi, looks at the monumental 'India Gate' and wonders innocently to his friend Mammachan (played by Biju Menon) that the ‘gate’ is fine but there is no wall attached, as is the case usually. Few of such laugh out loud moments are scattered here and there in the movie which keep up the engagement levels. 'Vellimoonga' is simple fun, uncomplicated.
The story is quite basic and premises are quite seen. Its about a small time politician named 'Mammachan' who is in his 40s but yet a bachelor. His cunningness to survive amidst localities who are jealous of him. Local politics and back stabbing form the narrative. The first half begins on a lower key but once Mammachan arrives he puts up a spirited performance. His character traits are good to watch. His exchanges with mother, his friend Pachan and his love at first sight all are positive points. The proposal scene is hilarious to say the least. But the plot seems to keep staying in a restricted mode and some of the sequences resemble that of skits played on TV. By interval, the movie seems average but with some sparkling funny moments and a zesty lead character.
The second half is thankfully on the upswing. The narrative travels for a while which helps and the comedy sequences are more related genuine and tied to Mammachan. The Delhi visit, hospital sequence all add to the fun. The build up to the election is quite usual but the added twist from Mammachan's end is good enough. The movie slowly closes off with a simple finale and expected twist in the end. One should feel happy by the end and Mammachan is sure to stay on in your mind.
Script by debutant Joji Thomas is genuinely funny in parts. Direction by Jibu Jacob is adequate. Music by Bijibal suits the movie, especially the title song and music for 'Vellaram Kannulla' song. Cinematography and Editing are complimentary to the style of the movie.
Biju Menon puts up a good show as the cunning yet sweet 'Mammachan'. Aju Varghese puts up a better than usual show as 'Pachan'. KPAC Lalitha, Pashanam Shaji, Siddique, Lena are all adequate. Perhaps one may feel the wanting for the story to move around more or explore the interesting lead character further. That keeps the movie from rising to greater levels.
All said and done, 'Vellimoonga' is a rooted in the local milieu which is nowadays seen less on Malayalam screen. Its about the interesting character called 'Mammachan' and some hilarious moments, which will sure get you laughing. Its simple and uncomplicated and just about enough.
Verdict - Simple Fun
Rating - 3/5
