Review
----------
In debutant Director Binu S's movie 'Itihasa', a new team has almost created a small slice of history, in its own way. With a theme which is based in fantasy and a concept which is hard to convince, not only the audience but even the crew, to the not so 'inspiring' cast on paper and a shoe string budget, there are odds stacked heavily against them but yet they manage to create a decently entertaining movie and almost come out trumps. Thats a little historical in its own way. At least, for the buffs to quote and get inspired years down the line.
'Itihasa' starts off with a little tale set in the history about a wonder ring which can switch personalities. This is quite neatly done using VFX. Then post titles starts off depicting the life of a small time goon Alvi (Shine Tom Chacko) and a young working girl Janaki (Anusree) both of whom are based in Kochi. There is light hearted fun in most scenes and it keeps going. Balu who plays Alvi's friend keeps the fun alive. The proceedings begin to lag a bit because we are all waiting for the much anticipated 'switch' of personalities. It sure does come in a little illogical and exaggerated way but still holds on. Post switch portions are quite hilarious. Post this there is a sequence when Anusree and Balu decide to rob someone at a coffee shop and from there for the next 10-15 mins the movie quite rises to a mass action movie feel. The song just before the interval is a drag but the interval comes much at the right time and a neat punch. Quite well done till now.
Post interval the identity switches keep on adding fun and the team tries to find a solution to switch the identities back without much success. The jokes at Alvi's home are fun and the flat episode looks a bit stretched. Even though it lags here and there the movie holds. It enters a decisive phase with a deadline being set for reverse switch. Post that the climax fight and so on look well done, especially the twist amidst the fight. The ending is quite adequate. You would not want to leave the seats without watching the making during end credits, just because by then you would have loved this team's work.
Technical side of the movie deserves strong mention, especially direction by Binu. He shows much promise in convincing the audience with a visual treatment wherever needed. Also, he has managed to keep the movie's narrative from slipping with some nice twists even though clichéd. Camera by Sinoj, Music by Deepak Dev and Editing by Jovin need special mention and so is the scripting by Anish Ashok. Pat on the back for the Producer, Rajesh Augustine for backing such a movie to the hilt.
Performance wise Anusree steals the show. She looks not only convincing as a guy with a goon's attitude but she also carries his fake acting well at the flat scenes. Balu comes in next with his comic act as usual. Shine Tom Chacko, to be fair to him has a tough act to deal with because it has to look neither a guy nor a eunuch. He tries hard but looks below par at many areas. His track looks just sobbing all the time after he becomes Janaki. A better actor as 'Alvi' is much desired while watching the movie but still cheers to him for trying such a character.
To sum it up, 'Itihasa' is quite like that wonder ring - a small surprise that’s tucked and packed away in its own sweet corner. It manages to convince you almost and have unabashed fun, so that by the end, you can appreciate the people behind this effort.
