    The Class Act
    -----------------
    Movie - Thira

    Review
    ----------

'A breathless thriller' - That might be a slight over kill but quite close to what you feel while watching Director Vineeth Srinivasan's new movie 'Thira'. It almost feels like a bullet out of the gun or a man on the run. Such is the penchant for thrillers in Malayalam, that anything short of class is considered an 'offense'. Its almost like walking the thin line. But not only does Vineeth get it right with 'Thira' but its almost like a graduation for himself from director of 'mush' to 'matter' and also a leap for thrillers in Malayalam cinema - in the way it has been presented. 'Thira' is a indeed a class act.

The movie is fresh on many counts. The locations, the casting, the language spoken by most characters, the presentation - its almost as if the movie is made with not much compromise. There is no attempt to explain things to audience. Narrative just keeps gunning ahead in its own world. Quite reminds you of a style that you see in many hollywood thrillers. The premise one must say is not entirely new. We have seen it before but its quite timely and relevant. The initial scenes to create an intrigue around Rohini's (Shobhana) character has helped. It almost follows a parallel narrative pattern for Rohini and Naveen (Dhyan Srinivasan) until they meet by the middle of first half. Until Interval, its quite at the same pace. Definitely a solid first half.

At interval one may not feel like watching the Ads, as it may just spoil the mood created. But the makers do well to play a repeat of the pre-interval scene again, just to set you up back on the ride. Second half is even better and by the time of the climax, its pure excitement and tension. The climax and the moments are wonderfully done. Its really touching, especially when Naveen enters the room to meet the girls. The finale bits leave you moved. 'Thira' just transcends in to fulfilling colors. The end scene which has been added for the sequel looks a bit out of place in the overall scenario, but still fine.

On the flip side, one may feel that the narrative mode (which does not care to explain) is a bit hurried at times. One may not get some of the incidents and pass on to next bits. Also, such a hurried execution has hintered the addition of more layers or flavours to both Rohini and Naveen's characters. Also, humor of any kind is almost zlich. Some may just think of it all as a simple chase and mission movie.

Dhyan Sreenivasan makes an impressive debut as Naveen. He looks a boy next door and with asthma attacks, he always looks vulnerable to complete the chase. That works well for his character. His rawness is good as well. Supporting cast is fresh and nice to watch. They have possibly been picked from local actors. Casting Director needs a pat on the back for this. Shobhana as Rohini is the center piece of the movie. She looks like a dare devil on the loose, throwing caution to the winds. She acts and looks enigmatic. Great come back this one is.

Cinematography by Jomon is awesome and almost takes it at par with the good 'on the run movies' you have seen in other languages. Editing by Ranjan Abraham and Music by Shaan Rahmaan are clinical. But the winner in the entire show is none other than the director Vineeth Srinivasan. Script by Rakesh Mantodi is decently good but its an out and out director's movie. From conceiving Shobhana (middle aged woman) as the main lead to driving the making with almost no compromises to creating a new visual and presentation language for the movie to directing it as a racy thriller to still creating the emotional moments (his forte) in the climax, its a Vineeth Srinivasan show altogether. One can now firmly say that he is one of the best film makers among the younger directors.

To sum up, 'Thira' is one movie you can proudly showcase to anyone as a Malayalam movie. With a fresh making, daring, timely theme, it makes you 'thrill' and 'think' at the same time. Its indeed a new realm for thrillers in Malayalam, atleast in terms of the making. Kudos to the director and the team. Its one hell of a ride and a pure class act at that - Just dont miss it.
