    Thanks bhai, nice review..

    A
child is like a butterfly in the wind. Some can fly higher than others.
But each one flies the best it can. Why compare one against the other? Each one is unique, special and beautiful.

    Damp Squib
    ---------------
    Movie - Hotel California
    04/05/13, PVR Kochi

    Review
    ----------

Aji John Directed 'Hotel California' feels like a tele-skit (the ones which you see in reality shows on TV) and not like a movie. Atleast the people behind the movie do not seem to have a good reason behind making this one. One may open his/her mind up to the start, which is like a huge number of parallel tracks going together. But it goes on and on with no aim to culminate and create any sense or entertainment what so ever out of it. By then, you realise that its a movie created for reasons best known to the makers themselves.

There is sizable style and richness on display. Jayasurya as 'Air port Jimmy' the stylish pimp, looks ravishing but there is no substance and the style soon seazes to interest. Anoop Menon has nothing much to do except a song, which again is placed for no reason or sense to the movie. Shyju Kurup plays a double role and looks trying hard at it. Shankar has been made to do something which he cant and fails badly. P.Balachandran, Babu Namboothiri have all been wasted for no reason. Artist who has done 'Bharathchandran IPS' has added some laughs, along with Nandu's terrorist team. Those few laughs are the meagre bits one may be left with, for the entire 2 and half hours. The movie feels long and boring by the time it reaches the end.

Anoop Menon takes everyone for granted and has come up with a hugely disappointing written piece. Aji John as director, does not add anything better. Music by Shaan tries to best ape what Gopi Sunder has done in movies like 'Nee Ko Nja Cha', but again how much can you lift a movie like this. The only song sung by Vijay Yesudas is ok but completely inconsequential.

To sum it up, to make a movie like 'Hotel California' is almost a criminal waste and to spend time on it is almost the same. Even to consider it as a crazy mad cap comedy like the ones Priyadarshan used to make (and still does in Bollywood) is a very distant call. Easily qualifies as one of the worse movies of the year till now.

    Verdict - Absurd

    The Tamil Style
    -------------------
    Movie - Neram
    10/5/13 Cinemax, Kochi.

    Review
    ------------

Tamil regional cinema has had its own style of movie making, which is quite distinct and over the top in its own zone. Debutant Director Alphonse Puthern's 'Neram' brings quite a bit of this style in to malayalam. The setting is essentially Chennai and more than half of the characters are tamil, hence the style also seems to be justifiable. 'Delhi Belly' hangover is quite evident and this is not the first movie to get inspired from it. But at the end of the day, what matters is how good the movie 'Neram' is while it lasts. To a reasonably fair extent, is the answer.

'Neram' is the story of a struggling young man named Mathew (Nivin Pauly) and the 'web' of troubles that surrounds him. The problems surrounding him are not new, but he has limited time to solve or find an answer to all this. The story unfurls during the events that progress during a day's time. Each event leads to another and situation gets more and more murkier. Does it all get solved for Mathew and change his take on his 'times'? Movie's second half holds the answer to these questions.

First half sets up the mood quite decently. The romantic song and the angle is fair, with light jokes thrown in here and there. More and more characters keep on adding and the tamil style is quite evident. By the end of first half, the feeling is just plain average. Second half is much better and even though you may get tired of some slow motion runs and fights, the way it finishes tying all the ends up is a watchable finale indeed.

Among the cast, Nivin does his role decently. Nothing great but his action avathar is good to watch. Nazriya looks really good, eye candy and pretty believable average beautiful girl. Shammi Thilakan is good as the police officer with a crazy name. Manoj K Jayan is decent. The new actor who has done Manoj K Jayan's brother's role is a small show stealer. Good casting there.

Direction is promising. Alphonse has been able to see through the darkness and create something decently entertaining and watchable. Writing is good at times with twists that keep you alive in the movie. Humor is light hearted most times, but never gets in to a laugh riot mode. Music and background score are good. 'Vaathil' and 'Pistah' add to the movie when needed. Editing is good with some new attempts in cuts.

To sum it up, go in with low expectations and 'Neram' is quite a watchable movie, especially for some light fun and the way it ties all ends up by the end. It may appeal to a slightly limited set of people, especially the young, because of the setting and tamil style included.

    Verdict - Watchable
    Rating - 2.5/5
