Movie - Geethanjali

Review
----------
'The Road Not taken' is not only a very famous poem but it also holds true for many stories and movies. Some movies are like that, because they show you the possibilities and tease you with what may happen and then finally when the moment comes, just about fall short for the sake of safety. Director Priyadarshan's latest movie 'Geethanjali' is perhaps one among those. It tries to be a horror-psycho-thriller, all at the same time, but does not quite become a new experience.
The movie which beings at a rather inconsequential note shows many people and events which look quite cooked up for setting the stage. By the time the story reaches the haunted house, we have a kind of average feeling. The wait though continues for Mohanlal as his iconic character of 'Dr.Sunny' in the yester year blockbuster 'Manichitrathazhu'. Until Mohanlal arrives things are a bit laborious but by interval its an average movie with a stage set for promising things to come. The ghost apperances to show horror create some resistance in us initially, since it gives the feeling that its defying logic and realism. But soon one has to live with it and feel ok.
In the second half, the movie starts to take up some challenges. The broken bible verse, possibility of a ghost acting via weaker souls, all add spice and possibilities to the story. It becomes even more interesting when Dr.Sunny stands his usual ground of solving the case based on scientific and medical grounds. Now, that seems like a mouth watering climax to look forward to. Add to that some comedy numbers that work for Mohanlal and Innocent and you have the movie going at Above Average levels until the climax arrives.
Now, the issue with climax is many folds. One is that the entire crux is so guessable and has been used in movies since the 80s (one may just instantly remember a 2007 Malayalam movie which has a similar climax). It sadly brings nothing new to the table. Secondly, it reduces Dr.Sunny's relevance as doctor (who treats and cures), rather he is a meare investigator here. In these aspects, the Climax may be a disappointment for many and in such a movie that holds the prime spot.
Performance wise Keerthy Suresh makes a solid debut in her act. Its not an easy role for a new comer and she has done it with much gusto and charm. Nishaan is ok but someone better could have created more screen impact. Mohanlal does his part as usual but there is nothing much for him to do. Cinematography by Thiru is good. Script by Abhilash Nair is engaging but there is a conscious effort to always remind you of 'Manichitrathazhu'. This applies not only to comedy scenes but also even to a climax scene which is a recreation of protagonist loosing control for the first time. This conscious ghost of 'Manichithrathazhu' keeps playing on your mind and you expect something fresh and new towards the end. Art Direction is good. Priyadarshan has tried at something hard and has some level of success.Music is so-so.
To sum it up, 'Geethanjali's crux or climax is something which actually takes you back in time, while the movie keeps constanly reminding you of 'Manichitrathazhu' which had something much ahead of its times. Perhaps there in lies the biggest irony. Nevertheless, you can watch it once for its neat pacing, horror elements, solid performance by a debutant and for the iconic character of Dr.Sunny. Keep your expectations in check and it should reasonbly work.
