Nostalgia Fan
--------------------
Movie - 1983

Review
-------------
Following a sport, being its ardent fan and reliving its nostalgic moments is a phenomenon seen world over. Debutant Director Abrid Shine's new movie '1983' revels in the same phenomena and becomes a watchable affair much because of its freshness and poetic presentation. In hind sight, '1983' may not be exactly be your typical sports movie, but more of an ode of a cricket fan to its rich nostalgia.
First half of the movie is good. The start is promising. Much of it is flowing nostalgia. The 'Sachin' tributes also work to good extent. Some of the scenes are hilarious, especially the match involving Gregory. There are some laugh out loud moments here. The romantic track is soothing and the songs colorful. The generation gap between parents is well presented. By the interval, you are feeling good. Stage is set for a grand fulfillment of a sports movie during the second half.
The second half keeps progressing at average levels. Throws up a sequence now and then which is interesting and keeps you more or less hooked. The episode when Rameshan (Nivin) decides to make a bowling machine is good. But as the movie progresses and closes, we are left with a feeling of being 'unfulfilled', especially being taken for a sports movie. There is no rising up towards the climax, excitement, a clincher of a game and sense of fulfillment. The piggybacking on Sachin, whenever the narrative gets stuck, feels a tad too much by the end. Perhaps then you tend to realize that it was expected to be more on nostalgia, than your quintessential sports movie. '1983' is a one time watch overall.
Nivin Pauly as 'Rameshan' puts up a decent central performance. There is not much thats breath taking or hugely impressive, especially since the character grows from his teens to 40s. But he does quite well holding on. Secondly its Srinda Ashab as 'Susheela'. She has been casted in a smart way and that creates interest during her sequences. Joy Mathew as Nivin's dad is notable. There is a huge supporting cast as friends but nothing much of that stays. Anoop Menon is tad better than usual, but he resorts to mouth big lines which come from no where.
Direction is good for a debutant. The jump in time shown once or twice is a nice screenplay method. Scripting is nice and tends to create good fun at times and smiles as well. Cinematography is well done.Music by Gopi Sundar is soothing especially 'Olanjali' song.
Overall, '1983' is a fresh movie which tries something new. May stay in your heart longer, if you grew up in 80s and 90s. It tries to take your life, build on the nostalgia (cricket and otherwise) around your growing years and even around Sachin's cricketing legend. Succeeds well in first half but leaves a tad 'bland' feeling by the end due to its mellow pre-climax and close. Nevertheless, its a one time watch no doubts.
Verdict - Fresh
Rating - 3/5
