We have got to watch two thrillers in Malayalam in the last one month, which are both 113 minutes long. First was 'Thira' and now comes Director VK Prakash's 'Silence'. The comparison comes to one’s mind more than the length but probably because of the similar genre and that they are coming so close on the heels of each other. Also perhaps more so because 'Silence' lacks the much needed drive, fizz and freshness which the former could boast off.
'Silence' stars the enigmatic Mammotty and as a Senior Advocate Aravind Chandrashekhar in Bengaluru, who is appearing for his last case because he has been promoted as a Judge. The opening hence is interesting because the premise seems new. We see how respected Aravind is and his revered and spotless career. Also, Aravind has a happy family and extended family as well. The scenes and settings at Bengaluru look good. Proceedings are smooth until Aravind starts to get crank calls threatening him and making his life a hell. The movie now rises to its intriguing portions where the identity of the crank caller becomes a serious and life threatening issue for Aravind's family. Usual suspects are conveniently planted but sense would prevail as the real culprit would be something more interesting. And interesting it is, when with all the chase and acrobatic stunts the pursuer finally arrives by the Interval. Above Average first half by all means.
The movie starts to slip away as the second half begins and progresses. The predictability of a past case gone along a wrong conclusion comes in to play which starts to put one off. The action moves to Kerala and one tends to expect some surprise but it travels in expected ways to a finale which is actually stretched out and boring as well. Long winding under water stunts and a case that had culminated years ago, the fresh investigation and all the efforts seem lacking fizz, excitement and quite predictable. The maverick killer seems ineffective and by the end 113 minutes do seem more than that.
The only actor that impresses you is Mammotty. He looks dashing, ravishing as the Senior Advocate and soon to be appointed Judge. Being ardent admirers of his famous advocate roles from the past, one may expect some riveting court scenes but sadly none of it is there except for a single one, where he brings his aura in to play with a countdown. The character is not so challenging for him but you cant take your eyes of him, as he has been presented in true aristocratic style. All others are quite inconsequential even in terms of written material or presentation. That includes Anoop Menon who best looks lost in the proceedings. The villain could have created an impact but does not work much.
Direction by VK Prakash is patchy but the first half is better than his last thriller outing 'Thank You'. It gives you hope which sadly does not translate in to grandeur. Writing could have been better as in since its a thriller, something new could have been tried by YV Rajesh. Cinematography is decent. Background music is loud and trying hard to create suspense many a times. Editing could have been better in parts.
Finally, 'Silence' being a thriller is understandably devoid of humour or cliché entertainment but what may be disappointing is the crux of the plot is quite predictable, oft repeated. Also, the way it unfurls in the later parts and the finale on screen is lacking fizz or freshness too. By the end, you are left desiring for way more than what you have got.
