It was almost 17 years back when Simran (Kajol in DDLJ) decided to go on one final holiday trip along with her friends and fell in love during the course of the journey. Since then countless bollywood heroes and heroines have 'discovered' the journey and love connection. Director Ayan Mukherji's new movie 'Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani' is not the first and certainly not the last movie that is going to come out in Bollywood with this formula. But the positive sides of 'YJHD' lies in the fact that even though the setting is formulaic, the movie tends to rise beyond the formula and delve deeper in to the conflict between personal dreams vs love, friendships that wither away over time, plurality of ambitions and loss of good times when one goes chasing his/her dreams.
The movie begins on a very much expected formulaic setting of a boring girl 'Naina' (Deepika) and her holiday trip along with a few adventurous school friends. Things seem pretty much forced and expected here. Ranbir starts his usual class act as 'Bunny'. The proceedings move to Shimla and the ice breaking 'Jhumma Chumma' routine is likable. Soon, the movie starts to rise beyond the formula when we delve deeper in to Bunny's ambitions and dreams. The journey that two of them take to the nearby peak is a starting point. By the time we hit Interval, its an above average feel.
Second half starts well but looses graph seriously close to the Aditi's (Kalki) Sangeet Ceremony. We almost feel that the movie is loosing the plot. But then the city trip shows how different Naina and Bunny's ambitions are. They are just 2 different people. There is neither right or wrong. And then the movie goes through some of its good and average portions at the same time. The friendship angle between Bunny, Aditi and Aki (Aditya Roy Kapur) is quite real and goes through its own nice highs and lows. By the end, just about when its getting laborious a bit, Bunny's home scene brings back things and closes it with a likable finale.
Ayan Mukherji just about manages to keep the promise he showed in 'Wake Up Sid'. Music is a major plus. 3-4 songs are good and taken in a eye-catching manner. 'Pichkaari', 'Kabira', 'Bathameez' are best of the lot. Cinematography is good. The movie could have been shorter by a good 20 minutes or more. It tends to get a bit boring in the second half.
The movie quite belongs to a overall performance by Ranbir Kappor and the chemistry between the lead pair. Ranbir oozes charm, ambition, dreams and keeps you grooved to the screen even though the setting may be formulaic. Deepika does better than her usual self. The chemistry between both is visible and crackling. Kalki and Aditya are more than just a presence. They add well to the movie. Farook Sheikh just needs one scene to leave an impression.
To sum it up, if you are the type that likes the quintessential bollywood romance, then 'YJHD' is a movie that keeps the formulaic setting and tries to go a bit beyond. It succeeds to some extent. The story about living ones own dreams, loosing relations and friendships when one moves on and about different people with different ambitions, 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Diwani' has relatable things. With a eye candy presentation, it deserves a look, if you are up for it.
Verdict - Lavish Bollywood Romance
Rating - 3/5
