There is a section in Suketu Mehta's [ Images ] much celebrated and Pulitzer Prize finalist book Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found, where the author goes at length to describe his several meetings with director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra [ Images ]. At one point Mehta suggests that Chopra is one person, but split into two personalities -- a thinking man's filmmaker, graduate of the Pune Film Institute, well-versed in the works of the international masters, as well as a big budget Bollywood producer, who has to make artistic compromises so that his films can become commercially successful. And Mehta concludes that people working in Bollywood are far smarter than the films they churn out.

I do not know Chopra personally nor his third-time director for hire Rajkumar Hirani [ Images ]. But in watching the press preview of 3 Idiots, I was drawn to Mehta's observation. 3 Idiots is the work by some very smart people -- starting with Chetan Bhagat [ Images ] whose best-selling novel Five Point Someone is an inspiration for the film; Hirani, who carries the critical and box office successes of the two Munnabhai [ Images ] films on his shoulders; Aamir Khan [ Images ], who supposedly is the most astute and calculating actor of our times, Chopra's long-time writing collaborator and playwright Abhijat Joshi, who quotes Henri Cartier-Bresson in the film's programme notes; and the wonderfully talented musician Shantanu Moitra [ Images ], who has done his best works for Chopra's films.

And there is Chopra, the film's producer -- who partly as a result of his repertoire of films -- fancies himself to be a powerhouse, similar to the Hollywood studio giants. There was so much secret surrounding 3 Idiots that those attending the press screening in New York City were requested to sign a confidentiality agreement and were told that there was an embargo on reviews prior to the film's December 23 premiere in India [ Images ].

In fact, in what was certainly the first for a Bollywood press screening, our cell phones were taken away during the entire run of the film (all big Hollywood studios do that to curb film piracy).
3 Idiots has much promise and it holds on to that ever so often during its nearly three-hour long run. But as often happens in Bollywood, ambitious projects led with good intentions, and packaged neatly with a ton of talent and smart brains, are compromised. And so 3 Idiots is eventually a rather disappointing film, fraught with improbable situations, major tear jerking melodramatic moments, and some loud caricatured performances, especially by the otherwise very talented Boman Irani [ Images ].

3 Idiots starts with an interesting premise -- two buddies (played with a lot of charm by R Madhavan [ Images ] and Sharman Joshi [ Images ]), who were in an engineer college together. They set out on a long car ride, first to Shimla and then all the way to Ladakh, in search of their lost friend (the very likeable Khan in a winning performance, even though the actor is challenged to play a character 20 years younger than his current age in most of the film).

Khan's Rancho is a bright, yet free-spirited student, who through his charisma is able to convince his two friends and others into thinking for themselves, following their hearts' desires, and challenging the old-school educational system emphasizing on the rote method of learning.

In a follow-up to his character in his directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par [ Images ], Khan plays Rancho with a wicked, sometime sarcastic grin and a whole lot of energy. 3 Idiots may be a wholly different project, but just as in TZP, Khan is once again set to change our social norms and beliefs. And just like in TZP, there will be people leaving 3 Idiots thinking that the film has changed their lives.

At times 3 Idiots has its heart in the right place and an energy level that took me back to the first half of Rang De Basanti [ Images ] (nice coincidence that Khan, Madhavan and Joshi act in both the films).

The songs, especially Aal Izz Well and Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh -- the first with brimful of energy and the second calm and melodious -- are a delight to watch on the screen. Kareena Kapoor [ Images ], in a far smaller role, adds a wondrous tone to the college life part of the film.

But 3 Idiots is like the two Chopras -- the intellectual filmmaker and his box office focused personality. In the midst of all the promising, sometimes highly entertaining and well written segments in the film, there are so many 'I cannot believe this' moments.

The film focuses on three suicides by students -- one on-screen, one attempted and the third off-screen. And each time we have to hear one of the characters mockingly say to the overbearing college principal (Boman Irani) that it is murder, not suicide.

At the point of intermission, the story takes a twist that is so impossible to believe that it almost derails the film. There are other ridiculous dramatic moments -- from Kareena Kapoor's character walking out of her marriage ceremony, to her sister delivering a baby on the college ping pong table, as Rancho -- getting instructions on a web cam, uses a suction device attached to a vacuum cleaner to yank out the baby, and the entire college student body watches in gleeful horror. Finally, when the baby cries, the orchestra roars and every student is overcome with emotion.

The three buddies hug, cry, kiss each other on cheeks and pull down their pants one too many times. But I think all of this bodes well for the personality of 3 Idiots that is hoping for a big box office success.

3 Idiots: Lacks punch, but feels really good

Dec 23, 2009 14:12 EST
aamir khan | Bollywood | Kareena Kapoor | Rajkumar Hirani
I must admit I had apprehensions going in to watch Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘3 Idiots’, inspite of the immense buzz that has surrounded the film.
One of my biggest qualms was how the director could hope to get away with casting middle aged men as college going boys.
That apprehension disappeared within the first 15 minutes of the film, because R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Aamir Khan play their roles so convincingly and with so much heart, that the age factor goes out of the window.
The film starts extremely well. Hirani infuses the first half of this film with his trademark sense of everyday humour and shapes up his characters with so much affection, that you are sucked into the story.
Aamir Khan plays Ranchoddas Shaymaldas Chajaad, an engineering student who has so much optimism and good will to share that some times it seems too good to be true (which it is, but we shall come back to that later.)
His two roommates Farhan and Raju don’t share his bubbling enthusiasm, but willingly go along with him on the many rides he takes them on.
They include fudging up a speech, fooling professors and playing tricks on all and sundry, as they go through their life in engineering college.
Rancho develops a strained relationship with the college dean played by Boman Irani, who believes in the old fashioned methods of teaching.
Rancho however, is of the opinion that education should be for the pursuit of knowledge and not the pursuit of success. (Munnabhai redux?)
Hirani introduces some interesting characters like Milimetre, the canteen boy who runs errands for the boys and Chatur Ramalingam, a whiny, sly NRI kid who is easily the funniest character in the film.
The film is told in flashback and is told through the eyes of Farhan, as he and Raju set out on a search for Rancho, who we are told in the beginning itself, has been untraceable after college.
As the friends set out to find him, they reminisce about the past.
The first half of the film is mostly brilliant, with some funny and poignant moments.
Watch out for the teacher’s day speech and the visit to Raju’s house, both of which provide great humour.
However, the second half loses its easy, understated feel and becomes too overbearing. There are one too many dramatic scenes, and too many incidents, many of which reduce the effectiveness of the film.
Also, the climax seems a little forced and convoluted, not what one would have expected from Hirani.
I know this is a director who is known for the feel good factor in his films and he definitely delivers that, but I would have liked to see some grey shades to Aamir’s character.
That doesn’t happen and he seems almost too good to be true. However his chemistry with Kareena Kapoor is crackling; watch out for the “zoobi doobi song.”
This film has some great performances, some great moments and brilliant writing by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi.
It doesn’t have the punch that the Munnabhai films had, but it does feel really good. You could even forgive the unnecessary drama in the film because it is done so honestly. Watch this one

The end of the year is here, and there were reportedly six hits out of the 240 films released this year (not counting the C-grade films that were released during the multiplex strike between April and June).
The six – Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, New York, Wanted, All The Best and Paa – have done reasonable business.
This weekend sees the release of Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor-starrer 3 Idiots, easily the most awaited film of the year.
And it comes with excellent timing – the last two big releases, Paa and Avatar, opened at least a week ago and their audience turnouts have plateaued to a certain extent. And the next big releases, Rann and Veer, toplining Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan respectively, are scheduled all the way out on January 22.
Which leaves 3 Idiots with virtually no competition, a free run of the multiplexes clean through the festive season, and into most of January.
With 25-30 shows planned at every multiplex, 3 Idiots is expected to have this year’s highest number of daily shows per film, the earliest being a 6 am show, another first.
The budget of the film, directed by Raju Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is pegged between Rs 50 crore and 60 crore.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra said industry sources who have seen the film believe it has the potential to be the year’s biggest hit. “Ticket rates have been hiked for all the shows of the film — Rs 90 morning shows are pegged at Rs 150 — but it’s still expected to take a fantastic opening. The winter holidays are here and people won’t have any choices in cinema halls, so they’ll definitely watch the film,” Mehra said.
Aamir, who visited Hindustan Times office on Tuesday evening, said he had originally not wanted to do the film because he felt he didn’t fit the bill. “Raju and Vidhu felt the role gelled with the person that I am. They made me do the impossible – pass off at 44 as a 22-year-old,” he said.

"This is the first film ever that can be downloaded and viewed on YouTube. But, we are yet to take a decision as to when it should be allowed for downloading legally after 8-12 weeks or later," Chopra said.

Responding to questions on reports that multiplexes had hiked the ticket prices of '3 Idiots' steeply, Chopra said ticket pricing was the prerogative of the multiplex owners. "But, I will still check on the prices. I want audiences from all sections of the society to watch my film," he said.

He said the decision to allow legal downloading was taken to discourage pirated prints.

"If there is a facility to watch movies on mobile phones, the film will be available there but at an appropriate time. We can't harm our theatrical business by releasing it on DTH," he said.

Chopra also denied that he had sold the distribution rights of the film to Big Pictures. "My company is releasing the film in collaboration with Big Pictures," he said.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi and Madhavan.

'3 Idiots' is releasing on Thursday in 1,766 screens world wide out of which 366 are in 32 countries. This is the largest international release for a Hindi film.

The premiere will be held at IMAX Wadala tonight and is expected to be a glittering affair. Among the host of prominent film personalities, Chopra said he has invited Salman and Shah Rukh Khan. "They have confirmed. I would love to have them at the premiere," he said.

Salman's 'Veer' is slated for release in January while SRK's 'My Name is Khan' in February.

Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That's the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there's 3 IDIOTS.

Come to think of it, 3 IDIOTS carries a huge 'burden' on its shoulders: The 'burden' of humungous expectations. And it's not without reasons...

3 IDIOTS is Aamir's next release after the record-breaker GHAJINI.

3 IDIOTS is Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's third film together, after MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, landmark films.

Three actors from the path-breaking RANG DE BASANTI team - Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman - team up yet again. Plus, Aamir's teaming up with Hirani. It couldn't get bigger!

3 IDIOTS is over-hyped and that could be dangerous for any film since it's the expectations which kill a film if the content doesn't match up to the hype. In this case, all izz well!

Write your own movie review of 3 Idiots Now let's demystify the myths...
3 IDIOTS is not about idiots or nincompoops. It's about three engineering students who believe in 'I'll Do It On my Terms' and that's what the three characters achieve in life and that's what Hirani, Chopra, Aamir eventually achieve at the end of the movie. Making a movie on their terms!

One more thing! You cannot draw parallels with any other film, past or present, successful or unsuccessful. And though people may draw parallels with GHAJINI or the MUNNABHAI series, it would be sacrilege to do so. 3 IDIOTS [based on a novel 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat] doesn't tilt, it stands tall.

Here's yet another illusion: 3 IDIOTS belongs to Aamir Khan. Yes, it does, but also to R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor and Omi, the entrant in Hindi movies, who delivers an equally sterling performance. The film would be incomplete without any of these characters.

To cut a long story short, all you'd like to say about the film is, All izz very, very, very, very, very well. Watch this film to know what it means!

Two friends [R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi] embark on a quest for a lost buddy. As they make their way through the perilous landscape [Shimla, Manali, Ladakh], another journey begins: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their friend - the irrepressible free-thinker Rancho [Aamir Khan], who, in his unique way, touched and changed their lives.

It's a story of their hostel days that swings between Rancho's romance with the spirited Pia [Kareena Kapoor] and his clash with and oppressive mentor, Viru Sahastrabudhhe [Boman Irani]. And then one day, suddenly, Rancho vanishes...

Who was he? Where did he come from? Why did he leave? The friend who influenced and inspired them to think creatively and independently, even as the conformist world called them three idiots. Where is the original idiot now?

Hirani is a genius and that has been proved twice in the past. He proves it for the third time with 3 IDIOTS. Screenplay writers Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and screenplay associate Vidhu Vinod Chopra narrate a story that's straight out of life. A story that each one of us can relate to or identify with.

Very often, we've read news-reports of students committing suicides because they've to live up to the family's pressure/expectations. This film depicts it at the very start, when a student commits suicide. But the issue doesn't end there, for 3 IDIOTS raises a pertinent question: Was it suicide or murder?

Hirani balances the rough and smooth incidents in their lives beautifully. The sequences in the campus, right from the ragging sequence at the start, to Omi's speech when the word 'chamatkaar' is changed to 'balatkaar' [superb; will bring the house down], to the trio getting caught in an embarrassing situation at the reception of Kareena's sister [Mona Singh], to the dinner sequence at Sharman's house, to Kareena and Aamir driving Sharman's seriously ill father on their bike to the hospital... the funny moments would make your jaws ache.

The interval point is a shocker. The point at which the first half ends will leave you stunned. Now what was that? Kahani mein twist!

The mystery is solved soon after the intermission ends and a new journey begins. That's one of the USPs of the film. Just when you think that the story would be solved, a new story begins. Of course, the pace dips slightly in its second hour, especially during the delivery sequence of Mona [which may appear filmy to a few], but the immediate sequence, when the baby boy is born and also the subsequent sequence between Boman and Aamir bring the film back on track. The culmination to the film is novel and yes, it's a master stroke from the writing point of view!

Every person behind the camera gives his/her best to the film. Hirani and Joshi's screenplay is the mainstay of the film. If you fondly recall 'Gandhigiri' from their previous film LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, you'd have a new phrase to chew on this time: 'All Izz Well'. Muraleedharan C.K.'s cinematography is awesome. Note the aerial view at the very start, when Madhavan and Sharman begin the journey to Shimla or the picture perfect look of Ladakh... the DoP does a magnificent job.

Shantanu Moitra's music may sound plain ordinary to ears, but when viewed on screen, the score is just perfect. 'Give Me Some Sunshine', 'All Is Well', 'Zoobie Doobie' are three tracks that would grow on you after you've watched the film. The choreography of 'All Izz Well' [Avit Dias] and 'Zoobie Doobie' [Bosco-Caesar] are eye-catching. The background score [Sanjay Wandrekar, Atul Raninga, Shantanu Moitra] is right.

3 IDIOTS belongs to everyone. But, yes, there's no denying that Aamir makes you forget all his past achievements as you watch the amazing actor play Rancho. To state that this ranks amongst his finest works would be an understatement. Madhavan is incredible, especially in the sequence when he explains his point of view to his father [Pareekshit Sahani]. Sharman is outstanding from start to end. This was a difficult role to portray and only an actor of calibre could've pulled it off. Boman is superb as the vicious head of the institute. The scenes between Aamir and Boman are extra-ordinary and it's a treat to watch these two powerful actors clash on the big screen, without getting overdramatic. Boman's appearance, mannerisms and dialogue delivery are exemplary.

The length of Kareena's role may not be as much as Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman, but she registers a strong impact nonetheless. Omi is excellent and the viewers are sure to love his acidic tongue and gestures in the movie. Mona Singh doesn't get much scope. Jaaved Jaffery is competent. Pareekshit Sahani is decent.

On the whole, 3 IDIOTS easily ranks amongst Aamir, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's finest films. Do yourself and your family a favour: Watch 3 IDIOTS. It's emotional, it's entertaining, it's enlightening. The film has tremendous youth appeal and feel-good factor to work in a big way.
