Ganso vs Ronaldinho, Maicon vs Rafael & The Samba Stars Fighting To Be In Brazil's Copa America Squad

Ahead of Brazil's clash against Scotland in north London this weekend, Daniel Edwards looks at the players who are fighting for a Copa America place...

    By Daniel Edwards

    Mar 26, 2011 10:00:00 AM

Copa America holders Brazil have already begun preparations to defend their title in the backyard of their bitterest rivals Argentina, and with talent in almost every single position the hardest task for coach Mano Menezes will be deciding which stars will be forced to stay at home while the chosen 22 fight for a fifth Copa from the last six tournaments.

After dedicating the first six months of his tenure to blooding the stars of the future in the Selecao, Menezes is starting to give some of the players who reached the World Cup quarter final in 2010 a chance to state their claim. The Verdeamarelho have a reputation for giving their a youngsters a chance to shine in the South American tournament, but will the ex-Corinthians boss continue the trend?

    Goalkeepers:

    On the Plane:
    Julio Cesar (Inter), Victor (Gremio)

    In The Airport Lounge: Jefferson

Searching For Ticket: Gomes (Tottenham), Fabio (Cruzeiro), Diego Alves (Almeria)

    Little Argument over Selecao Stoppers:

With Julio Cesar and Victor almost certain to play as first and second choice keepers, the only doubt remains over who will gain the last slot on the plane as the understudy. Inter's Cesar has been inconsistent in recent games but is still without a doubt the most talented number one, while Victor has been impressive for the Porto Alegre outfit. Don't be surprised if Cruzeiro captain Fabio's experience tells in gaining him the final place.

    Defenders:

On the Plane: Daniel Alves (Barcelona), David Luiz (Chelsea), Thiago Silva (Milan), Andre Santos (Fenerbahce)

In The Airport Lounge:Maicon (Inter), Luisao (Benfica), Lucio (Inter), Marcelo (Real Madrid)

Searching For Ticket:Mariano (Fluminense), Breno (Bayern Munchen), Miranda (Sao Paulo), Kleber (Internacional), Rafael (Manchester United)

Youth or Experience the Big Question:

There are unlikely to be too many surprises in the defenders Mano chooses to take over the border to Argentina, but the real decisions start when the first XI lines up against Venezuela for the first time in the Copa America. The coach must decide between dependable figures such as Lucio or the raw talent of David Luiz to anchor the defence; Miranda is a definite dark horse to make a back line which looks strong but is short on depth.

    Midfielders:

    On the Plane:
Lucas (Liverpool), Sandro (Tottenham), Ramires (Chelsea), Elias (Atletico Madrid)

In The Airport Lounge:Elano (Santos), Jadson (Shakhtar Donetsk), Renato Augusto (Bayer Leverkusen), Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos)

Searching For Ticket: Jucilei (Anzhi), Hernanes (Lazio), Ronaldinho (Flamengo), Henrique (Cruzeiro), Lucas (Sao Paulo), Kaka (Real Madrid)

Tough Choices Ahead for Midfield Maestros:

One of the toughest areas to narrow down a Brazil squad, Menezes' choices depend heavily on the fitness of two players, creative geniuses Ganso and Kaka. If the now-returned Santos youngster can shine for his club in the three months before the Copa he will be a certainty in a team that conspicuously lack a spark at number 10. This would effectively end the chances of Ronaldinho to make the cut, but the Flamengo man will be hoping for the call if he can impress in the Rio club.

Elsewhere Elano seems to have fought his way back in contention and will have an excellent chance to make his case on Sunday against Scotland, as will young Atletico Madrid midfielder Elias.

    Forwards:

On the Plane: Neymar (Santos), Alexandre Pato (Milan)

In The Airport Lounge:Robinho (Milan), Nilmar (Villarreal), Hulk (Porto)

Searching For Ticket:Andre (Bordeaux), Leandro Damiao (Internacional), Fred (Fluminense), Jonas (Valencia)

The Battle to Join Young Guns Neymar and Pato Heats up:

Barring disaster, Santos teenager Neymar and Milan's Pato will be the young hit-men around which Menezes' attack will be built, and the remaining Selecao frontmen will be battling for the chance to join them. Robinho's pace and talent on the ball makes him a natural choice to fill one of the wide attacking positions in a 4-3-3 set-up, while there are several players who can battle for the backup number nine jersey.

Hulk has been in fantastic form for Porto and should provide a stiff challenge to the more experienced Nilmar when it comes to narrowing down the names for the Copa. An interesting wild card could be Jonas, who managed an astonishing 23 goal haul with Gremio in 2010 and coud be leading the line against the Scots on Sunday.

Brazil 2-0 Scotland: Neymar Double Sees Selecao Stroll To Victory

Santos teenager bags a brace as Brazil cruise to a comfortable 2-0 friendly win at the Emirates...

Brazil cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Scotland in today's international friendly at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
In-demand Santos teenager Neymar was the star of the show, scoring either side of half-time to fully outline the huge future he has ahead of him.
It was Scotland who made a blistering start to the match, storming out of the blocks with pace and getting in the Brazilians’ faces. But Brazil gradually felt their way into proceedings, and when they did find their feet from the 15th minute onwards, they threatened to steamroller their opponents.
Jadson fired in an angled drive which Allan McGregor parried, and then Leandro Damiao rose highest to power an Elano corner against the crossbar and over.
Although Damiao was impressing in his first appearance for the Selecao, the undoubted star of the show was prodigious forward Neymar, who was an effulgent presence throughout.
The young star was tying the Scotland midfield and defence in knots with his sharp turns and sublime touches, and it was no surprise that it was he who opened the scoring three minutes before the break.
Left-back Andre Santos charged into space down the left and slipped the ball inside between Alan Hutton’s legs for the onrushing Neymar, who took a touch before whipping a low shot beyond McGregor’s flailing arms to break the deadlock. The lead was no less than Brazil deserved and left Scotland facing a daunting task in the second half.
Neymar immediately picked up where he’d left off in the first 45, firing against the crossbar with a magnificent effort from 25 yards, just seconds after the restart.
Brazil should have extended their lead in the 53rd minute, but Ramires screwed Dani Alves’ intelligent cut-back high over the crossbar.
Scotland began to force their way back into the game a little after the hour mark, but they struggled to find any fluency in the final third and were restricted to one long-range strike from Adam, which never troubled Julio Cesar.
Adam, in particular, was looking out of sorts for the Scots, and it was he who clumsily tripped Neymar inside the box to hand him the chance to extend Brazil’s lead in the 77th minute.
The 19-year-old made no mistake with the spot-kick, sweeping the ball into McGregor’s bottom right-hand corner.
The match effectively ended there as a contest, and although Scotland leave London with their tail firmly between their legs, they were always likely to be outclassed, and will not be too downhearted by the manner of defeat.
Brazil, meanwhile, will be delighted with their days work, and in particular the performance of starlet Neymar – who, if today’s showing is anything to go by, looks set to fulfil all expectations.

Legendary Brazilian striker Ronaldo will return to play for Corinthians, according to the club's president Andres Sanchez.Ronaldo, a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994 and 2002, retired from the game three months ago and has been pursuing a new career in player management and acting. However, 'O Fenemeno' is set for a shock return to the pitch and is expected to be offered a contract with Corinthians into mid-2012.
"Ronaldo is going to play again. I don't know if he will play three, four or five games, but he will be back," Sanchez told Lance.
The 34-year-old could be back in the side within the next few weeks and Inter and Barcelona are reported to be lined up for two lucrative friendly games provisionally scheduled for May 25 and June 2.
Every flight begins with a fall.
