Messi's five goals may have been from another planet, but Neymar's outrageous Copa Libertadores hat-trick was just as special
The Santos striker did his best to match the Barcelona icon's performance against Bayer Leverkusen with a memorable treble against Internacional on South America's big stage

On October 29, 2011, Lionel Messi astounded fans with a terrific first-half hat-trick to inspire his Barcelona team to a 5-0 win over Mallorca at Camp Nou. However, later that evening, another of world football’s most talented players went one better. A 19-year-old Neymar found the back of the net four times as his Santos side overcame Atletico Paranaense 4-1 in Sao Paulo.

Santos want to keep Neymar beyond 2014Neymar's 20 most dazzling moments so far

Fast-forward to March 7, 2012 and the pair were at it again.

As Barcelona hosted Bayer Leverkusen for the second leg of their Uefa Champions League round of 16 tie, the reigning champions surged to a stunning victory. Messi was in imperious form, becoming the first player in Champions League history to score five goals in a single game as the Blaugrana crushed the opposition 7-1.

His performance oozed a supreme ability, confidence and class which Neymar would do his best to match once more. Shortly after the full-time whistle in Barcelona, the Peixe looked to get their Copa Libertadores campaign back on track against Internacional after suffering a shock defeat to The Strongest in their opening group game.

From the off, the virtuoso Neymar showed his hunger for the game. Operating primarily from the left and coming inside, the 20-year-old showed a fantastic level of intelligence to draw fouls and link the play between his team-mates. A scintillating early run saw him fly past Nei down the right, creating an opportunity for Ibson to shoot, though his effort was closer to the corner flag.

For one so young, Neymar shows an innate ability to carry the pressure and responsibility that comes with being your side’s talisman. This trait was present early on when Santos were awarded a 19th minute penalty. Even his run-up seemed to suggest that scoring was a foregone conclusion. It was; he left Muriel rooted to the spot in the middle of the goal.

But it was the second half where the 2011 FIfa Puskas Award winner would amaze spectators.

Nine minutes after the restart, Neymar picked the ball up in his own half before charging for the opposing goal. His feet seemed to scurry on the floor, darting in different directions yet he still glided forward, beating no less than four players on his way to poking the ball into the net.

With 64 minutes played, fellow prospect Leandro Damiao pulled one back for the visitors but Neymar would immediately regain the limelight. Combined with his second strike, his hat-trick goal was reminiscent of Ryan Giggs’ extra time FA Cup semi-final winner against Arsenal in 1999. Picking the ball up in a similar position to that of his second, he charged at goal, untouchable, before clipping the ball past Muriel and into the roof of the net.

He could not go better than Messi’s five this time, but his goals were of enough quality to match the world’s best player. Following Ganso's lengthy injury sustained on international duty in September last year, Neymar learned to provide the side's creativity and invention. His collective play is now vastly underrated due to his exceptional goal scoring exploits, but it has made him a far more rounded player.

Brazil’s new golden boy has made himself one of the first names on the team sheet for Mano Menezes’ Brazil squad. They are a team in transition, searching for their identity ahead of the 2014 World Cup finals, but there is no doubt that Neymar will be the heart of that side. It will be the ultimate showdown. Argentina have the majestic Messi, but Brazil possess the nascent Neymar.

Barcelona prospect Rafa Alcântara named in Brazil Under-20 squadThe CBF have confirmed the Brazil Under-20 squad for the Copa Internacional do Mediterrâneo and caused a shock by including Barcelona's Rafinha.

Spain could of course force the youngster to make a decision by including the youngster in their Under-19 squad for friendlies with Montenegro later this month.

Rafinha has represented Spain at Under-17 and Under-19 level, but the CBF is hopeful of persuading the midfielder to follow his father into the Brazil set-up.

As Santos celebrate their 100th birthday, what does the future hold for the Brazilian icons?

The Copa Libertadores holders mark their centenary with their best team for almost 50 years, but questions over the current project's longevity must be answered to ensure success

    COMMENT
By Daniel Edwards | South American Football Editor

As Santos stars, past and present, gather to mark the club's landmark 100th anniversary on Saturday, a certain optimism is bound to surround Vila Belmiro. Less than a year has passed since that magical night in Sao Paulo when goals from Danilo and Neymar helped the Brazilians defeat the challenge of Penarol and lift the Copa Libertadores for the first time in 48 years.

That victory was the biggest yet in the Peixe renaissance, which began at the start of the 21st century with the emergence of home-grown stars such as Robinho, Diego and Elano and continues in the present day with Neymar and Ganso, the posterboys of both the team and Brazilian football. After decades of underachievement and a failure to emulate the great side of Pele back in the days of black and white, Santos are now once again established as one of South America's most powerful institutions.

The big question is, however, is this success a generational accident, or can the club maintain their level to consistently fight alongside Brazil's giants such as Flamengo, Corinthians and Palmeiras? There have been great leaps forward in this respect. Whereas previously the likes of Robinho and Diego had to be sold to Europe to balance the books, the new Peixe are determined to fight for their young stars.

In this aspect they are unquestionably aided by the booming Brazilian economy, which is slowly making its effect felt in sport. In common with other Serie A clubs, Santos are now able to go into partnership with asset-rich, publicity-hungry local businesses and sponsors who are happy to work with a winning product and support them financially. Hence why someone like Neymar, at the age of just 20 and with only a handful of international appearances to his name, can boast a European-level salary which proved crucial in his decision to stay in his home nation until at least 2014.

The Young Millionaire | Keeping Neymar has meant drastic restructuring for Santos

This investment in the superstars, however, has not come without its own price. At the start of 2012 the club announced that they were closing down their women's football team, twice winner of the Copa Libertadores Feminina and one of the most successful sides in Brazil. The futsal program was also victim to the cut, and although no official comment was made the general consensus is that the axings were necessary to balance the books after Neymar's lucrative new deal.

The other sacrifice made in keeping the flamboyant star can be seen right in the first team. The marquee names who bring in the sponsors may be retained, but a general hollowing out of the squad has continued unabated. Danilo, Alex Sandro, Alan Patrick and Ze Eduardo have all been sold to Europe after a fleeting spell in the Peixe and the defence in particular, as was aptly demonstrated in the Club World Cup against the irrepressible Barcelona, makes a mockery of the world-class club directors and staff want to construct in Vila Belmiro.

"Brilliant over 90 minutes, the current Santos team still haven't proved they can do the same over an entire season"
With Neymar, Ganso, Elano and Borges all present, there is no doubt that, as they celebrate the 100th birthday, few South Americans teams are as exciting to watch or as devastatingly effective in one-off games as the heirs of Pele, Pepe and Coutinho. Eighth and 10th-placed finishes in the last two national championships, however, point to a side that is still struggling to reproduce over 38 games what they can so brilliantly achieve inside a single 90 minutes. Until their league form begins to reflect their results in cups, the Peixe of 2012 will struggle to complete their dream of creating a dynasty equal to that of the 1960s Santasticos.

Few teams in world football can boast a more glorious century of success, excitement and legend than Santos, but the onus now must also be on the future. With more financial power than ever before and some of the planet's most exciting footballers wearing the distinctive shirt, there is plenty of reason to celebrate; but Neymar and co. must not stop trying to improve the failings of the Peixe model in order to seriously establish themselves as a consistent in Brazil and across the globe.

Romario: The current Brazil team is crap

The former international star held nothing back in a stinging attack on Mano Menezes and fears that if things don't change, World Cup humiliation on home soil is almost inevitable

Brazilian football legend Romario has launched a fierce attack on the current Selecao under Mano Menezes, and supported Flamengo coach Joel Santana as a much better option on the bench than the incumbent.

The 1994 World Cup winner has never held back when passing comment on either the national team or the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), and likened Ricardo Teixeira's resignation from the governing body's presidency as equivalent to removing a cancer.
But speaking to O Dia on Wednesday, the parliamentary deputy was blunter than ever as he strongly criticised Menezes and the Brazil team two years before they host the World Cup.

"The current team is crap, it would be tough even to get past the first round of the World Cup," Romario fired.

"Even the CBF president [Jose Maria Marin] has said that 2014's Brazil coach cannot be the same one as today's. There have to be results. We still have two years to prepare so that we don't suffer total humiliation."

The former Barcelona and PSV striker was equally colourful in backing his favoured candidate, Joel Santana, who some in Brazil have criticised for his traditional approach to coaching.

"I do not see it that way. Is it because he still uses a clipboard? There are plenty of people with laptops now, who still do a load of crap and their teams lose," he added, alluding to Menezes' fondness for technology.

Romario played a total of 70 games for Brazil, and with 55 goals only Pele and Ronaldo have hit the net more times in the Canarinha.
