NEW DELHI: Former India and Rajasthan Royals fast bowler S. Sreesanth has been banned for life by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for his role in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked this season's Indian Premier League.
"Mr. S. Sreesanth is banned for life from playing any representative cricket, or in any way being associated with the activities of the BCCI or its affiliates," the BCCI said in a statement after its disciplinary committee meeting in Delhi.
The other players implicated in the scam - Siddharth Trivedi, Ankeet Chavan and Amit Singh - have all been slapped with varying bans.
While Chavan has also been banned for life, Amit Singh and Trivedi got away with five-year and one-year bans respectively.
Trivedi and Harmeet Singh were absolved of charges of spot-fixing, but were found guilty of the lesser charge of not informing officials about approaches made by bookmakers. Harmeet, however, was exonerated and escaped without a ban.
This follows a BCCI probe headed by anti-corruption chief Ravi Sawani. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Chavan were found guilty on multiple accounts, including conceding a "pre-determined number of runs per over in exchange for bribes", the paper quoted the leaked report as saying.
Amit Singh, who played in the IPL till last year, was seen as the conduit between the cricketers and bookies, and described by Sawani as "the bad fish that spoils the entire pond".
Sawani had earlier recommended the players be banned for a period ranging from five years to life, according to newspaper reports.
