Unrest in Vilappilsala due to wide protest by natives

Thiruvananthapuram: Unrest is prevailing at Vilappilsala as natives are protesting against transportation of clay and machinery to the solid waste treatment plant on Friday. Though prohibitory orders were clamped, defying the order, natives protested by offering Pongala. Natives alao set on fire the vehicle which reached the plant. Many people were injured in the fire and police used water canons to extinguish the fire.
Though the vehicles reached the plant under strict security, local people defied all police force and prevented the vehicles from entering the plant. Police arrested women and children and removed them from the scene. But the protestors did not pay heed to the police request to disperse from the scene. To lend support to the agitators, deputy speaker N Sakthan too reached the spot.
Ever since Decemebr 21, 2011, waste transportation to Vilappilsala was blocked. Last February, the administration failed to transport the garbage from the city to the plant following protest from people in the area. Official sources today said the administration decided to transport the clay and equipment to construct a leachate treatment plant, following a High Court direction that the equipment should be transported before August 3. It was last February that the equipment needed for the leachate treatment plant reached. First the decision was not to transfer the same to the plant due to protest. But as per HC order, it was decided to shift .
The Kerala High Court, in its order earlier, directed the state government to re-open the Vilappilsala solid waste treatment plant and allow entry of garbage vehicles into the plant. The court also ordered the government to provide necessary police protection to the plant.
