DELHI 2010: Commonwealth Games chief fears for athletes' safety
COMMONWEALTH Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper admits athlete safety is his number one concern with preparations for Delhi 2010 mired in crisis.

A Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report made allegations of widespread corruption in construction projects for the Games over the weekend.
That comes as the latest chapter in a turbulent build-up to the Games, due to get underway on October 3, which has already seen the completion date for venues repeatedly delayed while the costs of Delhi 2010 have also escalated.
Delhi 2010 organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi is adamant he is ready to face any investigation into the allegations against the body regarding preparations for October's Commonwealth Games.
The city's preparations have come under further scrutiny over the past week however, with the Indian government stating it would investigate allegations of corruption against the organising committee.
But Hooper remains adamant that with a number of venues still not complete, the focus must be on ensuring the safety of the athletes who will participate in Delhi.
"Earlier, we were worried about security. Now our concern has moved to the safety of the athletes and players who would come here to participate," said Hooper.
"At this stage we cannot play a blame game. Now we need to focus on what we need to do - 60-odd days away from the Games.
"The transport work has to be in place, security has to be right. Those responsible must finish the work as a matter of urgency.
"The reality is that there is still work to be done on the vast majority of the venues, both inside and out," added Hooper. There is no denying that we can all see it for ourselves.
"But it is the responsibility of the venue owners - the government agencies - to get the stadia ready for the competitors.
"So on the back of the CVC report, we want to see confirmation that the venue approvals have all been secured and they are fit for purpose.
"The Organising Committee is relying upon venue owners to deliver. CGF is not interested in incriminating anyone at this stage."
Hooper did confirm that he believes investigations into corruption must be made but reiterated that it ought to be done after the Games, with last-minute preparations remaining the priority.
He did also admit to concern that the latest negative media reports emanating from Delhi are tarnishing the name of the Commonwealth Games.
"The CVC report is of concern. So many negative reports in the media give a bad name to the Games," he added.
"It is very frustrating from the point of view that we are seeing a barrage of accusations which are clearly damaging the Commonwealth Games and bringing the name of the Games into disrepute.
"From our point of view, and what we have seen on the corruption side of things, it's logical to say that it must be investigated and cannot be tolerated but all must be taken at the appropriate time.
"We are now eight weeks away from delivering one of the world's biggest multi-sporting events and therefore the focus at the moment must be on getting those things right that need to be put right.
We must ensure that those people who come out to the Commonwealths have an enjoyable, safe and secure experience and go home happy."

Shera - The Mascot
Shera, mascot of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, is the most visible face of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. His name comes from the Hindi word Sher – meaning tiger. Shera truly represents the modern Indian. He is an achiever with a positive attitude, a global citizen but justifiably proud of his nation’s ancient heritage, a fierce competitor but with integrity and honesty. Shera is also a ‘large-hearted gentleman’ who loves making friends and enthusing people to ‘come out and play’.
In Indian mythology, the tiger is associated with Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Shakti (or female power) and the vanquisher of evil. She rides her powerful vehicle – the tiger – into combat, especially in her epic and victorious battle against Mahishasur, a dreaded demon.
Shera embodies values that the nation is proud of: majesty, power, charisma, intelligence and grace. His athletic prowess, courage and speed on the field are legendary. He is also a reminder of the fragile environment he lives in and our responsibility towards the protection of his ecosystem.
