    Chelsea v West Brom (6-0)

    Blues hit Baggies for six

Chelsea began the defence of their Premier League title with a crushing 6-0 victory over West Brom as Didier Drogba scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge.
The Baggies looked bright in possession throughout but were taught a harsh lesson about life in the top flight as Chelsea ruthlessly capitalised on defensive mistakes

Roy Hodgson and Joe Cole were Liverpool's main arrivals over the summer

Liverpool player to watch: Joe Cole. He may have arrived on a free transfer but Joe Cole was the club's biggest signing of the summer. Possessing guile and technical ability in abundance, Cole has been brought in to add more flair and style to a Liverpool midfield and attack that was often bereft of ideas last season. Having been used sparingly by both Carlo Ancelotti and Fabio Capello over the past 12 months, Hodgson is hoping that Cole has a new lease of life as a regular first-team player at Anfield.
Arsenal player to watch: Marouane Chamakh. The Moroccan's transfer from Bordeaux was one of the worst-kept secrets in football last season, and sure enough he departed French shores on a free transfer in May. A danger in the air thanks to his height and strength, Chamakh adds a dimension to the Arsenal forward line that has been lacking since Emmanuel Adebayor left the club. Facing up to Jamie Carragher will provide a stark realisation of what life is like in the Premier League, but Chamakh appears to have all the tools at his disposal to be a success in England.

    Reina howler gifts Arsenal point

A mistake by Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina allowed Arsenal to salvage a draw (1-1) against a Reds side who had Joe Cole sent off on his Premier League debut.

Cole was red-carded for a lunge on Laurent Koscielny before David Ngog's driven shot put Liverpool ahead.
The lead lasted until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Reina spilled the rebound into his own net.
Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time.
The late drama capped a frantic finish to the game, with Reina the unlikely culprit as victory eluded a Liverpool side who had resolutely held Arsenal at bay.
Reina had produced two key earlier saves to help maintain Liverpool's lead as the Reds had defended with discipline and determination to neutralise Arsenal after Cole had received the first red card of his career.

Diego Maradona keen to manage Aston Villa, according to representative

Diego Maradona has launched a surreal bid to become next manager of Aston Villa, the Argentina legend revealing his love of the English countryside, stunning lack of knowledge of the British tabloid press (he thinks they respect privacy) and letting it be known that he would be interested in succeeding Martin O’Neill at the Premier League club.

Man Utd v Newcastle Utd (3-0) , FT
    33' Berbatov, 42' Fletcher , 85' Ryan Giggs

THEY put the old into Old Trafford but Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs show no sign of swapping their boots for carpet slippers.

With a combined age of 71, logic says the veteran duo should be a fading force in the English game.
Yet Scholes was man of the match in last week's impressive Community Shield win over Chelsea and was again the star of last night's comfortable victory over newly- promoted Newcastle.
When his mate Giggs, 36, entered the fray as a sub, Scholes picked him out on the far side and the Welshman set himself beautifully to smack a left-foot volley into the far corner to finish the visitors off with five minutes to go.
It maintained Giggs' incredible record of scoring in every one of the Premier League's 19 seasons, as well as the two before it started.
Watching from the stands was Franco Baldini, the England general manager who made a desperate call to Scholes on the eve of the World Cup to try to persuade him to end his international exile.
Scholes, 35, turned him down but suggested if Fabio Capello had asked him personally, he might have gone to South Africa.
How Baldini must have wished he had passed the phone on to the boss to do the job himself.
It is six years since Scholes gave up playing for his country and it has clearly benefited his club career - but it has been England's loss.
No one can pass a ball like the ginger nugget.
He does not score so many from the edge of the box these days but he creates even more chances for his team-mates than ever.
Newcastle got a draw at United on the opening day a couple of seasons ago and still went down - but they have a worse side now. Eight of last night's team featured for the club during that miserable capitulation.
The Toon signed only three new players this summer - freebies Sol Campbell and Dan Gosling, both of whom were injured last night, plus £1.5million midfielder James Perch, who looked like a fish out of water.

Champions Chelsea set down their marker for hanging on to their Premier League crown with a 6-0 win over another newly-promoted side West Brom on Saturday.
United did not quite produce the same fireworks but you got the feeling they could have had more if they really needed them. The gap in quality was enormous.
Yet Andy Carroll missed a great chance to give the Magpies a shock lead on 10 minutes - leaping well but misdirecting his header from Joey Barton's corner.
Wayne Rooney hooked a left-foot shot over the bar before Scholes then produced one of those gorgeous slide-rule passes to set up his team's 33rd-minute opener.
He played a ball inside the stretching Jose Enrique, who could only help it into the path of Dimitar Berbatov and the Bulgarian slammed a low right-footed shot past Steve Harper.
By the 41st minute it was 2-0. Although Patrice Evra's drive bounced off Rooney's foot, Darren Fletcher collected and rolled Fabricio Coloccini before firing home.
It was about damage limitation in the second half for the visitors as the hosts played some exhibition stuff.
An incisive pass from Scholes was flicked into the box by the outside of Rooney's boot but Berbatov, clean through, clipped it wide.
Nani tried a left-foot strike which whistled past the far post and Harper saved from Berbatov before Giggs finished off the night with his volleyed third.
Scholes got the man-of-the-match bubbly once again.
But it should have been a cup of cocoa and an early night because Fergie will be calling on the old fella a lot more often than planned if he keeps playing like this.
