Default Samsung beats Nokia in India

Close on the heels of becoming the world's largest seller of smartphones, Korean major Samsung has overtaken its Finnish rival Nokia to become the leader in the domestic market as well. This is the first time that Samsung's share - both in volume and value terms - exceeded that of its rival, Nokia, which had the leadership position till now.

Samsung's volume market share in November stood at nearly 38%, and value share at 35.2%, industry sources told TOI, quoting market research firm, GfK.

The domestic smartphone witnessed a churn over the last few months with Samsung cornering the highest share in October in value terms. Samsung's share of 32.3% was the highest by value in the smartphone market, while rival firm Nokia led in terms of volume sales during that month. Globally too, Samsung surged past Apple to become the world's largest seller of smartphones for the third quarter ended September this year.

Says Samsung Mobile and IT country head Ranjit Yadav: "At Samsung, we believe in offering our consumers innovative smart mobile devices across different operating systems and different price points, and giving them more choice. This has helped Samsung emerge as the preferred brand in the smartphone market in India."

The domestic market witnessed a robust double-digit growth during November, with smartphones contributing around 6% to overall mobile handsets during the year.

The market which was around 2.5 million units last year is expected to close this year with 8.5 million units, and then double next year. Priced in the range Rs 6,000 to Rs 40,000, smartphones have witnessed a strong adoption not only amongst business executives, but also among youth for on-the-go entertainment and functional use.

Nokia couldn't be reached for comments despite repeated attempts. A Nokia spokesperson had earlier told TOI; "We have been at the forefront of shaping internet consumption through smartphones for our consumers with our unparalleled services portfolio."

To strengthen its portfolio, Nokia recently launched the Lumia family of smartphones and still continues to be a leader in the overall mobile market, though with lesser numbers.

Samsung made a foray in the domestic market in June last year and now has a portfolio of 13 smartphones across platforms. Factors which have spurred growth in these devices are affordability and availability across operating platforms - Windows, Android and Bada. Also, over the year smartphones have become more affordable, and are available at attractive price points. The market dominated by Samsung, Nokia and RIM is expected to get more crowded with the entry of Chinese and other domestic companies next year. "We expect the smartphone portfolio to contribute 20% of our mobile portfolio by the end of the year," Yadav said.

According to CyberMedia Research, which tracks mobile handset sales, smartphone shipments touched the 7.9 million units in the January-September period this year, with sales crossing the 1 million mark for September alone. It also said that Samsung has become the market leader with the largest share in value terms in September.

Any GSM phone vulnerable to hacking: Researcher

A well-known expert on mobile phone security says a vulnerability in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones, instructing them to send text messages or make calls.
They could use the vulnerability in the GSM network technology, which is used by billions of people in about 80 percent of the global mobile market, to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Germany's Security Research Labs.

Similar attacks against a small number of smartphones have been done before, but the new attack could expose any cellphone using GSM technology.
"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short timeframe," Nohl told Reuters in advance of a presentation at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.
Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up across Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.
The phone users typically don't identify the problem until after they receive their bills and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.
Even though Nohl will not present details of attack at the conference he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

Default 14 lakh Aakash Tablets booked in 14 days

The new year may be a year of low-cost computing in India. Sales bookings for the world's cheapest tablet, Aakash, have soared to 14 lakh units just two weeks after it was put up for sale online for Rs 2,500 a piece.

To cater to the 'unexpected' demand, UK-based vendor Datawind, the maker of the $35 tablet, has decided to establish three new factories - in Cochin, Noida and Hyderabad - in the first half of 2012 to assemble the tablet. Datawind currently has only one factory in Hyderabad, with its vendor Quad, which makes the LCD panel for the tablet.

"We never expected such a high response from both corporate and individual buyers. We plan to supply 70,000-75,000 units per day once the factories are in place by April," Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, Datawind told ET from Panama, where he was invited to advise its government on its low-cost computing project.

"Around two weeks ago, we received a call from India's computer emergency response team that our website was probably suffering from a large cyber attack. We had to inform them we had just opened sale through our website," Tuli said. Datawind, which put out a limited 30,000 tablets for sale online with e-commerce provider Ncarry.com, has already exhausted the first lot.

A spokesman for Ncarry.com, said that the website is catering to orders across India, with delivery in 5-7 working days. Ncarry is a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Nimbuzz, which makes instant messaging applications. The Nimbuzz IM comes pre-installed on Aakash.

Pre-sales bookings for the Aakash tablet (about 400,000 in October) had surpassed the Indian tablet market which grossed about 250,000-300,000 tablets till last year.

Even with a resistive touch and slow processor, Aakash has received about 1 lakh orders a day since online launch last month. In comparison, Apple sold about 10 lakh iPads in 28 days and 30 lakh in 80 days of its launch in April 2010. Currently, the cheapest model of iPad at Rs 29,500, is about 12 times costlier than Aakash.

Aakash's maker Datawind is, however, strangulated with supply constraints, compared to Apple which managed smooth deliveries of the iPad. "We are not accepting cash for bookings currently, as we want to sort out supply issues," Tuli added.

Datawind plans to put on sale online the next version of Aakash - Ubislate 7, priced at Rs 2999, by mid-January. The newer version will come with a slot for insertion of a SIM card, for access of internet by GPRS or 2G connection. The current version of the tablet can access internet via WiFi access.

Besides, the newer version will be twice as fast with a 700 Mhz processor compared to a 366 Mhz processor in the current tablet. In another development, the government has extended the letter of credit to Datawind to supply the next lot of 90,000 tablets, even though IIT Rajasthan is yet to provide the test specifications for the next version, which it wants to procure for supply to students. The delay from the government's end is likely to land Aakash in the hands of commercial buyers before students for whom the low-cost tablet was meant for in the first place.
