    Nokia Carmode

Now, your Belle-powered smartphone will be more of an assistance than a distraction while you drive, thanks to Nokia Carmode.

The new Nokia Carmode application converts a Belle smartphone into a car and drive friendly device by enlarging the icons and highlighting the functions that are useful while driving such as navigation, music and calling

The application also brings Nokia Drive functionality, which gives users turn by turn navigation while driving. The Nokia Drive application works in both offline and online modes.

While Nokia Carmode application is available free of cost it comes with a car companion application called the Nokia Carmode with mirror link, available separately for Rs 300. This additional application allows the smartphone to connect to supported in-car entertainment systems such as Alpine and brings the functionality of Nokia Carmode right to the car's heads up display. Nokia has released the application programming interface (API) which can be used by car entertainment equipment manufacturers such as Alpine to include the functionality of Nokia Carmode in their systems. As of now, only Alpine provides this functionality in its newer systems, but more supported systems from different manufacturers are expected soon.

The Nokia Carmode application at present is only compatible with devices running Symbian Belle, but support for older devices is also expected. Nokia Carmode makes absolute sense for Belle smartphone users as it is a great way to avoid distraction while driving. The application can be downloaded from the Nokia application store

Android Holo themes to bring more uniformity to Android

The app developers would be able to develop their apps and widgets with the default theme, knowing well how their apps will look on the Android devices.

To bring uniformity to the Android platform, Google has now made it mandatory for the manufacturers to carry Holo themes if their devices have Android 4.0 and above. Holo themes are stock Android themes and come in blue hue, thin lines and sharp angles.

Till now, especially in the Android 3.0 version, there is an inconsistency in design of the user interfaces (UI) of different apps. For instance, the placement of back button of the app was at times different from Android native applications. This inconsistency often results in inconvenience for the users who need to accustom themselves to different user interfaces.
App developers would now have to develop their apps and widgets with the default theme. Google has however allowed handset makers to carry their customised interfaces such as the HTC Sense, Samsung's TouchWiz.

On Android Holo themes, Google in a blog post said, "In Android 4.0, Holo is different. We've made the inclusion of the unmodified Holo theme family a compatibility requirement for devices running Android 4.0 and forward. If the device has Android Market it will have the Holo themes as they were originally designed. This standardization goes for all of the public Holo widget styles as well. Holo styles will be stable from device to device, safe for use as parent styles for incremental customisations within your app."

Default HTC records first profit drop in 2 years

TAIPEI: HTC, Asia's second-largest smartphone maker, posted its first quarterly profit decline in two years as competing models from Apple and Samsung Electronics damped demand for its handsets. Fourth-quarter net income dropped 26% to NT$11 billion ($364 million) from NT$14.8 billion a year earlier, the Taoyuan, Taiwan-based company said in a statement on Friday. The average of 11 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg in the past four weeks was for profit of NT$11.6 billion.

Analysts predict sales and shipments will fall further this quarter after the company cut its outlook for revenue in the last three months of 2011. Sales of HTC handsets, including the Sensation, Wildfire and Rhyme, slowed in the fourth quarter.

"Competition from Apple and Samsung has been their key challenge," Dale Gai, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Barclays. "HTC has not had much focus in the mid to low-end, and they've underestimated the speed of growth in this segment."

Fourth-quarter revenue fell 2.5% from a year earlier to NT$101.4 billion, compared with the NT$103.3 billion average of 11 analyst estimates. Shipments dropped to 10 million units and will decline to 8.5 million this quarter.

Default Apple’s Siri doubles iPhone 4S data volumes

LONDON: Apple's voice recognition software Siri has prompted users of the iPhone 4S to use almost twice as much data compared with the handset's predecessor, placing greater pressure on operators, network firm Arieso said.

"Voice is the ultimate human interface," Arieso chief technology officer Michael Flanagan said in an interview in London.

"As you lower the barriers," consumers will use their smartphones' functions even more often, he said. Arieso, based in Atlanta, advises clients such as Vodafone Group, Telefonica and Nokia Siemens Networks on how to manage wireless networks.

Apple brought in Siri, dubbed a virtual personal assistant, in its latest iPhone update in October. With a few spoken words, the artificial-intelligence feature helps iPhone users schedule appointments, write text messages and check the local weather.

Arieso said it measured more than 1 million subscribers across a single European network in both urban and rural areas, without identifying the operator.

The strain of data-intensive devices may place additional pressure on mobile operators as they build out faster networks. Verizon Wireless, the largest US carrier, said this week the number of iPhones it sold doubled to 4.2 million in the fourth quarter.

Default Samsung's operating profit rises 73% due to surging sales of Galaxy phones

Samsung Electronics, Asia's largest consumer-electronics company, reported a record quarterly profit on surging sales of Galaxy phones and a one-time gain from selling its hard-disk drive business. Operating profit (005930) increased 73% to 5.2 trillion won ($4.5 billion) in the three months that ended in December, the Suwon, South Korea-based company said in a statement on Friday. That beat the 4.6 trillion-won average of 29 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales rose 12% to 47 trillion won.

Mobile-phone sales surpassed a record 300 million units last year as Galaxy smartphones helped win consumers amid competition with Apple's iPhone. Samsung, which sold its hard-disk drive business to Seagate Technology, is introducing more mobile devices to offset slumping profits at the chip and flat-screen panel businesses.

"The mobile business is generating a huge chunk of profit now," James Song, a Seoul-based analyst at Daewoo Securities, said by telephone. "It may be getting harder for Apple to catch up because they only have a limited number of models." Samsung shares fell 1.4% to 1,040,000 won at the 3 pm close of trading in Seoul, while the benchmark Kospi index declined 1.1%.

While smartphone sales helped propel Samsung's revenue to a record last year, fourth-quarter operating profit was inflated by proceeds from the Seagate deal, James Chung, a Seoul-based spokesman for the Suwon, South Korea-based firm, said after the announcement.
