Nokia Lumia 800 faces software glitch, impact minimal in India

NEW DELHI: Nokia's first Windows-based phone Lumia 800 has been caught in a software glitch within days of its launch with much fanfare, but the company said it would not have any major impact in India.

"India impact will be minimal since we just started shipping. Therefore, if a consumer buys Nokia Lumia 800 today, there is absolutely no impact. Nokia will go the extra mile to delight their consumers, especially with the flagship product like Lumia 800," the Nokia India spokesperson told PTI.

Some customers have started commenting in social media platforms that the preloaded diagnostics tool in some of the Nokia Lumia 800 phones was showing lower battery capacity than expected, according to a post on the Nokia support forums.

However, this issue has not been found to affect the recently introduced Nokia Lumia 710.

Following tests, it can be confirmed that while the battery in devices is fine in some variants a "software problem is preventing some units of the Nokia Lumia 800 from accessing the full battery capacity", a Nokia statement said.

"The good news is that as this is a software problem it can be easily resolved. The planned software update in early 2012, as well as including many performance enhancements, will also include a fix that will enable the affected phones to access the total battery capacity. For anyone who does not want to wait for the software update, Nokia can arrange for a replacement phone," the post added.

The much-awaited Lumia, the first offering following the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, was launched globally in October. The new product has recently been launched in India to provide much-needed boost for the Finnish entity in the highly competitive smartphone segment.

7 lakh Android devices are activated daily

Andy Rubin, the man in charge of Google's Android operations, on Wednesday said that the company was activating 700,000 Android devices everyday. The figure was around 550,000 in October when the company unveiled the latest version of Android - Ice Cream Sandwich.

Over 700,000 activations everyday means that Google's hardware partners, which include big firms like Samsung, HTC and Sony Ericsson as well as smaller players like Micromax , are well set to sell over 60 million Android-powered phones in the current quarter.

Explaining the activation, Rubin hinted that actual sales could be even higher. "We count each device only once (i.e, we don't count re-sold devices), and activations mean you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service," he said.

In November, Apple had revealed that it sold 17.07 million iPhones between July and September this year. Few weeks ago, analysts at UBS, a firm that offers financial consultancy, said Apple may sell around 28-30 million iPhones in the current quarter . In November, Gartner said Android had a 52% worldwide share in smartphones market.

LG to trim presence in low-cost phone segment

LG India, the country's largest consumer durables maker, will sell less of low-cost mobile handsets as a falling rupee threatens the viability of the category.

"The category is not giving us margins. So, we will have minimum presence in the low-cost segment and focus more on the premium category," LG India MD Soon Kwon said. LG will now focus on handsets priced Rs 4,000 upwards.

Domestic handset maker Olive Mobiles, too, will cut its presence in the sub- Rs2,000 category because the rupee's record 15% fall against the US dollar this year has made imports costlier and sales of low-margin, massmarket products unviable.

Most mobile phone companies, including LG and Olive, import handset for the Indian market. Kwon said that the industry will see a shift towards smartphones next year and companies not present in the higher-end category may have to exit the market.

LG will increase its smartphone portfolio in a bid to improve its market share. According to industry insiders, LG has less than 2% share in the Indian mobile handset market, down from being among the top five players last year.

Kwon blamed its late entry for LG's laggard performance in the handset market so far.

Olive Mobiles too said it would increase its play in the smartphones and tablets segments, while limiting exposure in the low-cost handsets category. "We will not launch new models in the low-cost category," Olive Mobiles Chief Executive Officer Arun Khanna said.

The company will launch wi-fi enabled tablets in the Rs 5,000-6,000 range and 3Genabled ones in the Rs 7,000-8,000 range next year, he said.

Most handset makers increased prices by up to 10% in the last two-three months to pass on the increased cost burden due to the sharp fall in the rupee. On Wednesday the currency appreciated 37 paise to close at Rs 52.50.

Experts said the low-cost segment has become unviable for most players, but bigger players cannot afford to exit because of the sheer size of the market. It will not make businesssense for big local handset makers to vacate the market because people are still buying cheap phones, said market researcher International Data Corporation's Research Director Deepak Kumar.

"Large portion of customers come from the lower strata of society.... It is the reality of the handset market and it will not go away," he said.

Established domestic handset players such as Micromax, Karbonn, Spice, Maxx and Lava are investing in after-sales service support networks, back-end supply chain, and in-house design and research and development capabilities as part of their long-term strategies.

They are expecting some tough times. Spice Mobility Managing Director Dilip Modi said that the next few quarters would be "painful" because prices are not being raised in proportion to the rate at which the dollar is rising against the rupee.

"Making phones is our core business, so we will have to take some pains for the next few quarters, and we're prepared for it," he said.

Modi said companies that entered the market for the short-term or added handsets as an ancillary business may feel the pressure on margins more than the established companies and hence may want to exit.

Symbian name gets dropped, latest version called Nokia Belle coming 2012 february

Nokia is all set to bid adieu to its Symbian branding. In a blog post, the Finnish company announced that its next version of Symbian OS will be called Nokia Belle. The latest move appears to be part of Nokia's drive to bring all its products under the Nokia product brand. Previously, Nokia had renamed its Ovi Store to Nokia Store. However, the company did not elaborate reasons behind the new OS name.
The Nokia Belle will be arriving in several Nokia smartphones including Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7, and Nokia Oro. The roll-out of the OS will begin in February 2012. The Nokia Belle update comes with various new features including more home screens. In addition, the home screen widgets have been revamped and given more functionality. The Nokia Belle update also makes reading e-mails and other texts on the smartphones easier.
“Launched earlier this year with Nokia 701, Nokia 700 and Nokia 603 smartphones, the UI [Nokia Belle] has received lots of positive feedback from our customers. The enhanced versions of Nokia N8, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01 have now started their journey from the factories to the shops with Nokia Belle preinstalled, arriving first in China, then around the world,” says Nokia in the blog post.

Android devices running Intel SoCs due in first half of 2012

While we’ve been hearing about Intel’s development of processors for mobile phones and tablets for a while now, it now looks like things are finally coming to a head – with actual units running Android out in the wild. The expected availability remains vague however, with the first devices scheduled to hit retail shelves in the first half of 2012.
MIT’s Technology Review has reportedly been testing prototype Android smartphones and tablets running on Intel’s Medfield processor, an SoC chipset we’d heard of back in February, at MWC 2011. You might also remember Intel tying up with Google in the recent past, in the hope to enable an optimized Intel platform for future Android devices.
The reference designs, or prototype smartphones and tablets have reportedly been sent to various manufacturers across the world, to convince them of the platform’s viability for their upcoming devices. So far, there’s been no word which OEMs helped make the prototypes.
According to the Technology Review report, the smartphone prototype was similar in design to the iPhone 4, but supposedly, was a lot lighter. The reviewers apparently found the phone powerful and smooth, capable of playing Blu-ray video without a hitch, or stream it to connected TV. Web browsing was also considered to be speedy and smooth.
Notably, the Intel smartphone prototype featured a versatile camera, capable of a full-fledged burst mode that enabled the capture of up to ten 8MP images at a rate of 15/sec. Further tests by Intel itself supposedly showed the device to have better browsing and graphics performance than the top three Android devices in the market today, combined with a lower power consumption.
Coming to the Intel's tablet prototype, the report said the device, running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, was similar to the iPad in width and weight, but had a larger screen. It apparently delivered better performance than current Android Honeycomb tablets in the market.
Relevantly, AMD is not missing from the action, with the Android x86 operating system already optimized for the AMD Fusion Brazos platform. Also check out Intel's leaked roadmap, from Computex 2011.
