One out of six Android apps is malware, says research
A recent study by tech security company Symantec has revealed that out of six Android apps, one is malware. The study went on to claim that 36 per cent of all the Android apps are Grayware. These are not necessarily malicious in design, but do spur harmful things such as user tracking. The research was conducted from a pool of 6.3 million Android apps.
According to the study, cyber attacks are largely focused on small and mid size firms, since they are creating a lot of apps, and are also more vulnerable. In fact, 60 per cent of the attacks in 2014 were on these organisations.
In a report in TOI, director of Symantec technology sales for India and Saarc, Tarun Kaura said, "The attackers know that a large portion of intellectual properties are generated from smaller companies. With hundreds of startups coming up every day in India, the number of attacks are likely to rise as companies give more importance to bringing a product to market quickly than on security."
The cities Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai were the ones that had the most cyber attacks last year. Amongst the various business sectors, the worst hit ones were telecom, banking, transport and energy. The report also claims that when it comes to social media scams, India is only behind the US.
