Brian Lara training hard in the gym to be part of IPL, says mentor Joey Carew

Brian Lara's mentor and former West Indies batsman Joey Carew told MiD DAY last night that the Trinidadian master cannot wait to be part of the Indian Premier League which he is set to grace next year despite being away from international cricket since 2007.

    Brian Lara
Lara (41) is in the top bracket base price of $400,000 for the IPL auction to be held in Bangalore on January 8 and 9 2011.

    Not surprised
The former West Indies captain was part of the rebel Indian Cricket League, but did not enjoy a fruitful experience. He was in India during the last IPL.

Carew said he was not surprised when Lara expressed his desire of returning to big-time cricket. "He indicated his intentions to me earlier this year. He is very determined to do well and is certainly going to succeed. I expect to see good things from Brian in this tournament and I am sure he will be worth the price a team pays for him," said Carew over the phone from Trinidad.

Asked whether he would be in peak physical condition to counter the best in a format not exactly suited to older cricketers, Carew said, "He has been training hard - running and working out in the gym. It doesn't take him long to get fit. He will be near-peak fitness soon."

Carew indicated that Lara was missing the game. "When you have spent a while being involved in something which you love so much, it is very difficult to avoid it for long. I expected him to return and this is his big opportunity now," he said.

Left handed Lara played in in Zimbabwe's domestic Twenty20 competition a few months ago. "I would like to see myself as someone who can make a contribution even if I am not in the final XI. I would like to get involved in a holistic way and not just as a player," he was quoted as saying with regards to the IPL.

Top bracket ($400,000) men Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, James Anderson, Kevin Pietersen, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Yuvraj Singh, Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor, Graeme Smith, AB de Villiers, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Brian Lara and Chris Gayle.

Karachi: Pakistan's cricket board Saturday announced that it contacted Indian Premier league (IPL) officials regarding the participation Pakistani players in the fourth edition but are yet to get a response from them.

Subhan Ahmed, COO of the Pakistan Cricket Board, told reporters here that the lack of response from the IPL led to the exclusion of the Pakistani players from the cash-rich T20 league.

PCB ready to play more series at neutral venues

Ahmed said that the PCB wants its players to be part of the league.

"The PCB stance is simple: we want our players to participate in the IPL," he said.

"We have on our own tried to contact the IPL to find the actual status. This was last week but we have yet to hear from them.

"From our end, all the documentation that is needed, we undertake to provide them, whether that is permissions or NOCs. But their playing or not in this event is not in our hands," Ahmed said.

"We definitely want our players and we are willing that they go there and participate."

"No player or franchise has approached us," Ahmed said.

"They have actually revised the process of inducting players so any player who wants to participate will have to get permission and NOC from their board. No player has approached us," he pointed out.

The IPL has pruned its auction list for the next season from a preliminary 416 to 350, and also increased the base prices of Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. All 80 players named in the top three price bands of the preliminary list have retained their place in the final list for the auction, which is scheduled to be held in Bangalore on January 8 and 9.

In the preliminary list, 21 players including former West Indies batsman Brian Lara had been in the highest bracket of US$400,000, a bunch that Ganguly has now joined after his reserve price was raised from $200,000. Laxman, who has had a vintage year in Tests in 2010, also had his base price bumped up from $200,000 to $300,000.

Ganguly and Laxman are not the first players to modify their reserve prices. Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble had earlier changed their base price from $200,000 to $400,000. An IPL official confirmed that the players had the right to choose their reserve price. "This has been the practice in every IPL," said the league's chief operating officer Sundar Raman, "we merely set the bands of reserve prices."

But one of the franchise officials put a different spin to Ganguly increasing his base price. "Ganguly might have understood that there are not many franchises willing to even consider him. But to my knowledge one of the franchises has already assured him that they will buy him out. So, if there is only one franchise willing to buy but assuring him why not hike his price then. Probably that made Ganguly hike his price."

Previous IPL auctions have shown that base prices are not indicative of the final amount for which the franchise will buy the player. For example, at the first auction in 2008, Ishant Sharma was listed at $150,000 but was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders at $950,000, while Hayden was listed at $250,000 and was bought by Chennai Super Kings at $375,000. "With the requirement of each franchise minimal, virtually more than half of these players in the auction list will not attract any attention," an IPL official said.

Only 12 players were retained by their teams ahead of the auction, with three of the eight existing franchises - Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Kolkata - choosing to release all their players into the auction pool. As a result, those three franchises will have the entire complement of $9 million at their disposal for the auction, while the other teams will begin the auctions with purses reduced in accordance to the number of players they retained. Chennai and Mumbai Indians, who retained the maximum allowed four players each, will go into the auction with only $4.5 million to spend.

The season is set to go ahead with 10 teams and 74 matches as originally planned, since the BCCI is not likely to move the Supreme Court after it lost its High C

Kumble pulls out of IPL auction

Anil Kumble has cited business commitments for his withdrawal

    Series/Tournaments: Indian Premier League
Teams: India | Royal Challengers Bangalore
Anil Kumble, the former Indian legspinner who also captained Royal Challengers Bangalore, has withdrawn from this weekend's IPL auction, citing business commitments. He had been among the 22 players with the highest reserve price of US$400,000 for the IPL auction to be held in Bangalore.

"I wish to withdraw from the players auction for IPL IV scheduled for the 8th and 9th of January 2011 in Bangalore," Kumble said in a press release. "I have enjoyed my stint at the IPL so far and thank all concerned for the support extended." He told ESPNcricinfo that he would continue to be involved with the Bangalore franchise, though not as a player.

Kumble retired from international cricket in 2008, and remains India's leading wicket-taker in Tests (619) and one-dayers (337). In November 2010, Kumble won the elections to become president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and he is also the vice-chairman of the state's wildlife board.

In the IPL, Bangalore had a forgettable inaugural season under Rahul Dravid, and started poorly in 2009 with Kevin Pietersen at the helm. Kumble took over as leader midway through that season and helped turn round Bangalore's form, taking them to the final, and also captained them to the semi-finals last year. He was among the most effective bowlers in the previous two seasons, taking 17 wickets with an economy of 6.42 in 2010, and 21 at an economy of 5.86 in 2009.

The IPL's chief operating officer Sundar Raman tweeted that Kumble's absence will be felt. "Jumbo [Kumble's nickname] will be missed in IPL. Been an inspiration for many youngsters."
