Well they deserved it (if what Vyaasan wrote is to be believed). Karnan was the first Pandava. Krishna being Lord, would surely have known it. Still, when Karnan got down to pull his chariot out of the rain-soaked gorund, Krishna advises Arjuna to kill him, by telling him about Draupadi's shame and the eventual requirement of victory for the good over the evil.
