Grp D: Real Madrid vs Lyon Preview

Ahead of Tuesday's Group D against Lyon, Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has set his sights on qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase as soon as possible.
    Lyon, the envy of Europe
Madrid have picked up two wins from two games so far - 1-0 at Dinamo Zagreb and 3-0 at home to Ajax - and take on Les Gones knowing victory would move them to the brink of the last 16 as they look to improve on last year's performance in the competition, when they crashed out in an ill-tempered semi-final against Barcelona.

Traffic jam earns Casillas Real Madrid fine

(Reuters) - Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas was fined for turning up late to training on Monday despite having evidence for coach Jose Mourinho that he was stuck in a traffic jam.
"The week starts badly," Spain captain and goalkeeper Casillas said on his Facebook page, with an uploaded photograph of backed-up cars on a motorway.
"People from Madrid, and those who aren't, have run into traffic jams, and me in particular, has a fine imposed on me by Mourinho for arriving late at training. I add evidence!!
"PS: At least we brought home the three points from Malaga!"
Real were 4-0 winners at Malaga on Saturday and host Villarreal in their next La Liga outing on Wednesday.

Real Madrid 3-0 Villarreal: Goals from Benzema, Kaka & Di Maria move hosts up to second in La Liga table

Jose Mourinho's men put in scintillating first half performance to heap further misery on Juan Carlos Garrido's team, as the Bernabeu side go one point behind Levante

A goal apiece from Karim Benzema, Kaka, and Angel di Maria was enough for Real Madrid to defeat Villarreal 3-0 in La Liga at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.
Jose Mourinho's side came rapidly out of the blocks at the start of the game and quickly established a very high tempo in the match, managing to find the back of the Villarreal net within three minutes, but Sergio Ramos' headed goal was rightfully judged as offside.
It took just three minutes for the hosts to strike again, and this time it counted. Di Maria found space on the half-way line and drove a glorious pass over the top of the Villarreal defence for Benzema, who took the ball down with his chest and cheekily clipped the ball over the on-rushing Diego Lopez.
Madrid struck again six minutes later when Benzema played the ball into the path of Kaka on the edge of the Villarreal box, and with his back to goal, the Brazilian swivelled round and drove the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.
The home side heaped further misery on Juan Carlos Garrido's men on the half hour mark. The hosts launched a terrific counter attack through Marcelo down the left-hand side, who picked out Benzema in the middle, and the Frenchman then slipped a lovely pass through for Di Maria before the winger shuffled the ball onto his left foot before calmly slotting home.
In front of an expectant Santiago Bernabeu crowd, the second half was played to a different formula as Madrid took their foot off the gas and allowed Villarreal more possession on the ball, as the game was increasingly played out in the middle of the park.
The visitors enjoyed extended periods of time on the ball in the second 45 minutes, but failed to create any concrete chances, coming closest from a speculative shot just outside the box from Mario that Iker Casillas managed to parry away to safety.
This result puts Real Madrid above arch rivals Barcelona and into second place in La Liga on 22 points, whilst Villarreal find themselves precariously above the relegation zone in 17th place on seven points.

    Mourinho: Enjoy Kaka's return

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho says Kaka's return to form should be a matter of joy for the entire football fraternity.
The Brazilian midfielder struggled for form and fitness since his move to the Bernabeu in 2009, but now seems to be rapidly reaching the form that made him so fearsome for AC Milan.
