RCB, Mumbai Indians flouted rules, say IPL franchises

    Indranil Basu, TNN | Oct 10, 2011, 01.17AM IST

NEW DELHI: The fact that both Chris Gayle and Dirk Nannes have represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Champions League T20 has irked some IPL teams who feel that a rule was flouted when RCB played the two together.

Sources say the aggrieved teams have either already complained to the IPL governing council or are planning to do so. They also want the GC to redefine clearly the rules which govern player replacement.

According to some IPL franchises, IPL rules suggest that Gayle and Nannes, whom the former has replaced as the fast bowler was injured, could not have played together. The rule says that if a player was replaced for the whole season, he cannot return till the end of the season. But Nannes did return to play.

Some IPL franchises also allege that RCB had exceeded the total purse of $9 million on player salary. As per the squad details circulated by BCCI on March 11, RCB had spent $8,944,348. Subsequently, Gayle (base price $400,000) replaced Nannes but now with both players featuring in the squad in the Champions League, it effectively means that RCB were spending $9,344,348, more than the cap.

When TOI contacted IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla over the allegations, he rather vaguely said: "CL T20 comprises of a learned Technical Committee that considers the law of the game and the amendments. There were a lot of cases (along with Gayle's appeal) presented to the Technical Committee. A final decision on the matter was framed through the discretion of the members of the committee."

RCB officials simply said that they had permission to play both Gayle and Nannes from the CL committee.

    KKR lodge a protest too

Kolkata Knight Riders, who also played in the Champions League, have lodged a protest against Mumbai Indians playing five foreigners instead of the stipulated four in a few CL games.

MI were allowed to field a fifth foreigner since they claimed they were not in a position to play an eleven because of injuries. However, one of the Indian players in their injured list, Suryakumar Yadav, scored 188 in a local game a day after being declared unfit by MI.

"It's difficult to comprehend how a player is deemed unfit to play in CLT20 but is fit enough score a big hundred in local cricket. A few franchises may be taking the rules a bit too lightly and are being allowed to get away with this," a team owner complained.
