Ronaldo hits 30th goal as Real rout Espanyol | Reuters

(Reuters) - Cristiano Ronaldo took his league tally for the season to 30 as leaders Real Madrid swept aside Espanyol 5-0 at the Bernabeu to restore their 10-point advantage over Barcelona in La Liga on Sunday.
The Portuguese forward, last season's European Golden Boot winner with 40 league goals, opened the scoring from Gonzalo Higuain's layoff in the 23rd minute, to take his total in all competitions to 38.
Sami Khedira doubled the lead after playing a one-two with his German international team mate Mesut Ozil in the 38th minute and Higuain buried a third just after the re-start.
Kaka set up the third, bagged the fourth with a run and shot off the post in the 66th, and pulled back for Higuain to hammer the fifth high into the net in the 78th.
Jose Mourinho's team moved a step closer towards their first league title in four years as they climbed to 67 points with 13 left to play.
"We're very pleased," Argentina international Higuain told Spanish television.
"There's still a long way to go so it was important for us to maintain our points advantage."
Champions Barcelona survived a 46th-minute red card for Gerard Pique to beat lowly Sporting Gijon 3-1 at home to move on to 57 points on Saturday.
Sofiane Feghouli earned Valencia a 1-0 victory at Granada, his side's first road win in La Liga since November, to keep them third in the standings with 43 points.
Home keeper Julio Cesar made a hash of parrying the Frenchman's tame shot in the 32nd minute in a scrappy match littered with yellow cards.
Valencia's second league win of 2012 strengthened their hold on third place ahead of Athletic Bilbao in fourth with 37.
Manchester United's opponents in the Europa League next week moved into the Champions League places with a 2-0 home win over Real Sociedad in the Basque derby.
Markel Susaeta scored in each half, the second a superb freekick struck into the top corner 10 minutes from time.
The visitors from San Sebastian were unlucky not to level at the beginning of the second half when a Carlos Vela shot appeared to cross the line before Gorka Iraizoz got to the ball.
Sixth-placed Levante with 35 points can reclaim fourth place with a win at home to Real Betis on Monday.
Basement side Real Zaragoza kept alive their hopes of avoiding the drop with a 2-1 comeback win against Villarreal, thanks to goals from Luis Garcia and Abraham Minero in the last five minutes.
The cash-strapped club, who are in administration, earned their first home win since October and have 18 points, nine from safety.

OSE MOURINHO will hold Roman Abramovich to ransom if he is asked to return as Chelsea’s saviour by insisting he remains the world’s best-paid manager on £12million a year and demanding to bring Cristiano Ronaldo with him.
Former Chelsea boss Mourinho is high on owner Abramovich’s list of permanent replacements for the sacked Andre Villas-Boas.
Barcelona’s Pep Guardiola is understood to be Chelsea’s dream choice, but he will have to be convinced to walk away from the Nou Camp and then talked out of the idea of taking a year off.

Germany coach Joachim Low has also entered the frame, but claims in Switzerland that he met Abramovich at a Geneva hotel yesterday morning were denied. His present contract runs until 2014.
Mourinho is set to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and is already stating his intention to return to the Premier League.
His relationship with Abramovich has improved since his Stamford Bridge sacking in 2007 but Mourinho will not make it easy for his former employers if he is asked to return. He is the highest-paid manager in world football, earning £11.2m a year at Madrid – more than double what Villas-Boas was paid at Chelsea – and would want that figure bettered.

But even more costly would be Mourinho’s demand to have full control of the club’s transfer policy and his desire to bring former Manchester United forward Ronaldo with him. Like Mourinho, Ronaldo has become fed up with the constant interference of Real president Florentino Perez and is unsure of his long-term future at the Bernabeu.
Real paid a world-record £80m to sign Ronaldo, 27, from United and, after 96 goals in 88 games, would want at least £100m for him.
Mourinho and Ronaldo share the same Portuguese super-agent, Jorge Mendes.
The pair could be targeted by United or City if Sir Alex Ferguson retires or Roberto Mancini misses out on the Premier League title.

Betis 2-3 Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo at the double as league leaders rack up 11th straight Liga success

Los Blancos came up against dogged opposition in the form of the Andalusians and claimed all three points courtesy of the Portuguese attacker's valuable double

Real Madrid displayed champion credentials as they recorded a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin on Saturday night to go provisionally 13 points clear of Barcelona in La Liga.

Jorge Molina gave the home team the lead on 10 minutes before Gonzalo Higuain levelled 15 minutes later. Cristiano Ronaldo's strike just after the break then gave Los Blancos the lead, only for Jefferson Montero to equalise three minutes later. Ronaldo grabbed his second of the evening 17 minutes from time to earn his side an 11th straight Liga victory in Jose Mourinho's 100th match as coach of the Santiago Bernabeu side.

The home team made a bright start to the game yet it was still a surprise when they took the lead in the 10th minute. Nacho's chipped ball was brilliantly controlled by Ruben Castro before the former Deportivo man slid it into the path of the unmarked Jorge Molina, who expertly smashed the ball past Iker Casillas from 12 yards out.

Despite continuing to look dangerous in attack, Betis appeared shaky at the back and were punished on 25 minutes as Los Blancos drew level. Mesut Ozil's lofted pass found Gonzalo Higuain, who raced clear of Jose Dorado before slamming the ball past Fabricio from 15 yards, a superb finish from the Argentine who now has 20 goals this campaign.

Conceding an equaliser was an obvious blow for Pepe Mel's men yet they were able to recover their composure and came within a whisker of regaining the lead on 42 minutes. Salva Sevilla's free-kick from just outside the box looked to be heading in, only for Casillas to superbly tip the ball onto the crossbar before Madrid cleared the danger.

It could have been Madrid heading into the break with the lead though when the visitors tested the keeper just a minute later. Marcelo's chipped pass fell to Ronaldo, who had been played onside by Paulao, yet Fabricio was alert enough to divert the ball for a corner following the Portuguese attacker's effort from close range.

Betis started the second period impressively yet found themselves behind for the first time in the game on 52 minutes. Kaka's looping pass into the box was volleyed across the six-yard line by Marcelo with Ronaldo on cue to sweep the ball home - an instinctive finish from the prolific Portuguese.

However, the Verdiblancos found an equaliser only three minutes later with Madrid conceding from a set piece; an all too familiar event for Madridistas. Salva Sevilla's corner was not the best yet the ball rebounded off the chest of Alvaro Arbeloa and straight to Jefferson Montero, who smashed it into the bottom corner with Casillas completely helpless.

For all their hard work, Betis were to come away with nothing as Ronaldo's predatory instincts broke the hearts of the home faithful on 73 minutes. Kaka's corner was expertly headed towards goal by Sergio Ramos yet despite Fabricio's decent stop, the ball fell to the 27-year-old to half-volley into an empty net.

Madrid are back at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday when they face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League for a place in the quarter-finals, while Betis are in action next weekend as they travel to Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona can cut the gap at the top back to 10 points with victory at Racing Santander on Sunday.
