Manchester City heading out East as they return to action July 02, 2012
Manchester City are heading to China this summer as they prepare for their defence of the Premier League trophy. Roberto Mancini’s team – which toured America and played in the Dublin Cup last year – will play Arsenal in the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing on July 27, the day the Olympics begin in London. Chen Wei, vice- secretary general of the Beijing Football Association said: “The BFA is looking forward to the Arsenal and Manchester City match at the Beijing National Stadium on the evening of the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London. “We are committed to the continued growth of football in Beijing and pleased that these two top clubs will work with us to achieve our goals.” City are also set to play Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on July 30. Fanbase Ian Cafferky, City’s chief commercial brand officer, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to meet our Malaysian fans for the very first time. “When we looked to go on tour, we looked for our fans and what the statistics told us, and Malaysia has the fastest growing fanbase in the world.
“I am sure the Premier League fans in Malaysia know what an exciting period for City this is right now, and this visit continues our exciting growth story. “I am certain that it is just the beginning and we look forward to connecting in meaningful ways with our fans and Malaysian football in the run-up to the tour and for many years after.” Stockport County have also announced that they will play a City XI next month. The team, likely to be made up of players from the Elite Development Squad, are set to face County at Edgeley Park on Saturday, July 28 at 3pm.
