Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says "every player has his price", which may pave the way for the January departure of Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Armenian playmaker has not started a game since the defeat at Chelsea on 5 November and has not been in the matchday squad for the last four games.
Mkhitaryan became Mourinho's third signing when he joined from Borussia Dortmund for a ?30m fee 18 months ago.
But BBC Sport understands there has been a "breakdown of trust".
Speaking before Sunday's trip to West Brom, Mourinho said: "If a player is not happy and brings with the request a number we consider good for us, I would never say no.
"That is my approach as a manager. Every player has a price."
Last January, Mourinho allowed Memphis Depay to join Lyon and Morgan Schneiderlin to move to Everton.
He subsequently released Bastian Schweinsteiger from his contract so he could take up a lucrative offer with Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.
Defender Luke Shaw is another potential January departure, although the indications have been that the former Southampton player intends to remain at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.
Marouane Fellaini's contract expires at the end of the season and, so far, United's efforts to persuade the Belgian to sign an extension have failed.
However, Mourinho likes the midfielder and selling him is not thought to be an option, particularly as Fellaini knows he can maximise his earnings in the summer if he left for free

Mata and Lingard would get considerable mins if mkhi leaves and we didn't possibly get anyone else in!! Pereira could be recalled too if he is willing to be back
When a player has the quality and he fails to show it on the pitch consistently, fans has all the right to be critical and manager has all the right to decide if time and up and search for pastures new!

Luis Suarez: "Both Griezmann and Coutinho are elite players that are playing at the top level. They are where they are for a reason. They're both young and have long careers ahead of them, and Barcelona always want the best players." [rac105]
No plans for big money signings in January for #MUFC. Should be a quite window however money is there should something unexpected present itself. (Mail)
Atletico Madrid will complain to FIFA over an alleged approach from Barcelona to forward Antoine Griezmann, according to Sky sources.
Griezmann has been linked with several of the biggest clubs in Europe but signed a new deal with Atletico in June, which will keep him with the club until 2022.
However, according to reports, Atletico are claiming Barca have made contact with people close to the 26-year-old France international.
Barcelona are currently top of the La Liga table, six points clear of Atletico in second.

Ian Wright thinks the way Arsenal have handled the contract situations of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez has been "disgusting business", and believes the latter should be sold in January as he looks "disinterested" this season.
Ozil and Sanchez have been two of Arsenal's key players over the last few seasons yet both are entering the final six months of their contracts and will be free to negotiate with European clubs from January.
While Ozil has been one of Arsenal's better performers this season, Sanchez, who came close to leaving last summer, has been below his best.
Arsene Wenger said recently that he thinks Ozil is keen to stay at Arsenaland is showing some of his best form since signing for the club in 2013.
While it could be argued that Ozil is playing for a move away, Wright added: "At least he is putting in a shift to help the team win points. But Sanchez you might as well recoup whatever money you can in January because he does not look interested."
