IPL 2012 to start, end in Chennai

The fifth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), comprising nine teams and 76 matches, will begin and end in Chennai, with the opening match on April 4 and the final on May 27. The teams will play each other at home and away during a league phase consisting of 72 games at 12, possibly 13, venues, beginning with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings playing Champions League T20 winners Mumbai Indians.
There won't, however, be any matches in Sri Lanka, the BCCI apparently turning down a suggestion by Sri Lanka Cricket to stage a few games there.
The Pune Warriors franchise will host eight games at the new stadium in Pune, subject to its completion. In 2011, Pune had to stage their 'home' games at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Dharamsala and Visakhapatman will also host two games each, and Cuttack is listed as an alternate venue to Hyderabad for two matches.
The first Qualifier, which will be contested by the top two teams in the league, and the Eliminator, contested by Nos. 3 and 4, will be held in Bangalore. Chennai will host the second Qualifier, which will be played between the winner of the Eliminator and the loser of the first Qualifier, and the tournament final.
The tournament is scheduled to begin 12 days after the Asia Cup final and a week after the end of South Africa's tour of New Zealand. At present there are three international series that will clash with the 2012 IPL and could affect player availability for both the franchises and the countries. Sri Lanka are hosting England in April, while West Indies host Australia and then travel to England in May.
The next player auction for the IPL is scheduled for February 4.

Keeper-batsman first transfer of IPL 2012 trading window

    MEDIA RELEASE

The IPL today announced the first transfer of the 2012 Trading window. Dinesh Karthik, wicketkeeper-batsman, will join the Mumbai Indians squad for the 2012 season of the tournament. Karthik was acquired by the Kings XI Punjab in the 2011 IPL auction, and he played in all 14 of Kings XI's matches last season. In the first three seasons of the IPL, he played 42 matches for the Delhi Daredevils.

Nita Ambani, owner of the Mumbai Indians franchise, commented, "We are very pleased to add a player of Dinesh Karthik's calibre and specific skills to the Mumbai Indians squad as this addition will further strengthen our side."

The owners of Kings XI Punjab said,"Dinesh played an important role for Kings XI Punjab last season, but with our captain Adam Gilchrist donning
the wicketkeeping gloves, we were unable to harness Dinesh's complete potential. Everybody at Kings XI Punjab wishes him the very best in his future endeavours."

"It looks like the 2012 Trading Window will be an active one as the franchises look to revise and strengthen their squads in advance of the Player Auction on 4 February 2012," Rajeev Shukla, Chairman, IPL, said.

Rahul Dravid to lead Rajasthan Royals
Shane Warne passes the baton to batting maestro

    MEDIA RELEASE

Rajasthan Royals today named Rahul Dravid the new captain of the IPL franchise formerly led by Shane Warne. Rahul Dravid, who represented the franchise in the 2011 edition, in all aspects of the teams cricketing strategy and will guide its youth and talent development initiatives. The Indian Premier Leagues fifth edition is scheduled to begin in Chennai on April 4, 2012.

The Rajasthan Royals captain was recently conferred the Polly Umrigar Award for India's Best Cricketer of 2010-11 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The 38-year-old former Indian captain had a great year in which he scored 1,258 runs in 15 Tests, which included six centuries.

Speaking about his new role in the franchise, Rahul Dravid said, 'I am honoured to lead the Rajasthan Royals. I hope to live up to the confidence shown in me by the franchise and give our fans an exciting season of cricket. I look forward to the valuable inputs from my team-mates who are already leading their national sides and clubs. My aim will be to get the best out of a very talented squad and invoke the same team spirit that won the franchise the first IPL and has been a hallmark of the Rajasthan Royals ever since. I am confident that by doing so we will have a great chance of winning the tournament again.''

Raghu Iyer, CEO of Rajasthan Royals, said on the occasion, ''We are delighted to announce Dravid as Captain. He epitomises all the values of the Royals franchise with his true grit and never say die attitude. We hope all Royals fans will get behind Rahul and the team in the upcoming seasons.''

Shane Warne, former captain of Rajasthan Royals, said, ''I would like to congratulate Rahul Dravid on his appointment as the captain of the Royals. He is not only one of the world's best batsmen, but a leader par excellence. The Royals squad is a bunch of extremely energetic and talented players who know their roles perfectly well and I am sure they will thrive under Dravid's inspiring leadership. I will be keenly following the Royals and Dravid and would like to wish them the best!''

Rajasthan Royals, who lifted the IPL trophy in its inaugural season in 2008, are looking to repeat the winning performance under Dravid's astute leadership in next year's tournament. The legendary No. 3 batsman will also be a valuable asset in the Royals' initiatives involving young talent such as the Kanni Thahryamal Tournament that concluded at Jaipur's Sanskar School today.

The cricketing legend has been in excellent form and is now the highest run-getter in Tests in 2011; he recently became only the second batsman in the history of the game to have crossed 13,000 runs in that format. Since he joined Rajasthan Royals, Dravid has been the team's best batsman, notching 343 runs in 12 matches at a strike-rate of 109.24.
