അതിഭാവുകത്വമോ അമാനുഷിക സ്വഭാവ വിശേഷങ്ങളോ ഇല്ലാത്ത കഥാപാത്രത്തെയും ഒരു ചിത്രത്തെയുമാണ് രഞ്ജിത് സ്പിരിറ്റിലൂടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

രഞ്ജിത്തും മോഹന്*ലാലും ഒത്തുചേര്*ന്നപ്പോഴൊക്കെ അമാനുഷിക കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ പിറവിതന്നെയായിരുന്നു. ആ പാറ്റേണ്* അപ്പാടെ മാറ്റിമറിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് രഞ്ജിത്തും തന്റെ കഴിഞ്ഞ ഏതാനും ചിത്രങ്ങള്* അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്. ആ പുതുമ സ്പിരിറ്റിലും ഉള്*ക്കൊള്ളിക്കാന്* അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു.

പരിമിതമായ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്*... ഏറെ അഭിനയ മുഹൂര്*ത്തങ്ങള്*... ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രത്തെ ഏറെ ആകര്*ഷകമാക്കുന്നത്.

രഘുനന്ദന്* ഒരു ബാങ്ക് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്നു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ബാങ്ക് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായി ലണ്ടനിലും കെയ്റോയിലും ഒക്കെ ജോലിനോക്കിയതാണ്. ഒരുപക്ഷേ, യാന്ത്രികമായ ഈ ഓഫീസ് ജോലിയില്* ഒതുങ്ങുന്നതായിരുന്നില്ല അയാളുടെ മനസ്. പതിവു ചിന്താഗതികള്*. കാണുന്നതിനേക്കാള്* കാണുന്നതിനപ്പുറത്തേക്കുള്ള ചിന്തകള്*. ഇതൊക്കെ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഈ ഓഫീസ് ജോലിയില്*നിന്നും ചാടിച്ചു എന്നതു സത്യം. പിന്നീടെത്തുന്നത് പത്രപ്രവര്*ത്തകനായി. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മെട്രോ നഗരങ്ങളായ മുംബൈയിലും ദില്ലിയിലുമൊക്കെയായിരുന്നു അത്. അതിലും ഒതുങ്ങിയിരുന്നില്ല അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിശാലമായ മനസ്. എഴുത്തിന്റെ ലോകത്തിലേക്കായിരുന്നു മനസ് പറന്നത്. ഇപ്പോള്* ഒരു ഇംഗ്ളീഷ് നോവലിന്റെ രചനയില്*.

പിന്നെയുമുണ്ട് ഒന്നുരണ്ട് സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്*. മീരയും ഭര്*ത്താവ് അലക്സിയും. മീര രഘുവിന്റെ മുന്*ഭാര്യകൂടിയാണെന്ന് പറയുമ്പോഴാണ് രഘുനന്ദന്റെ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം മനസിലാക്കുന്നത്. സരസമായ ഈ ജീവിതത്തിനിടയില്* വന്നുചേരുന്ന സാധാരണക്കാരനായ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം- പ്ളംബര്* മണിയന്*. ഈ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം രഘുനന്ദന്റെ ജീവിതത്തില്* ഒരു ലക്ഷ്യവുമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു.

'Spirit' completed in 31 days

For the first time in the recent history of Mollywood , a Mohanlal film has been completed in 31 days. Yes, the new movie 'Spirit' directed by Renjith has made a record by getting finished in minimum days. This will also help the movie to reduce its budgets just to half of a normal Lal film, which usually into around 5-6 crores. The movie about the growing alcoholism among the new generation Keralites, will be a satirical feel good film that will appeal to family and new generation viewers alike. It is widely expected that Ranjith , who had spearheaded the revival of quality cinema in Mollywood , will create another satisfying and socially committed flick with this 'Spirit'. The movie is expected to be on theatres by next month.Your text


Director Ranjith, who has wrapped up the shooting of his latest film ‘Spirit’ with Mohanlal in the lead role, says that this is a film that attempts to address substance abuse issues. Ranjith feels that ‘Spirit’ would have a very valid statement to make on an addiction that has started eating it way into the Kerala society – that of alcohol.
Ranjith adds that there would not be any effort to advice and advocate a view point, nor would the film try to spread awareness against the use of alcohol. But it would definitely discuss issues that should be of great concern to us, like the impact of alcohol use on health and familial relations, and even drug abuse that has become very common in the younger generations.
‘Spirit’ also has Shankar Ramakrishnan playing a key role. The film marks the coming together of the director with Mohanlal after a long time. Ranjith’s recent films like ‘Pranchiyettan and the Saint’ and ‘Indian Rupee’ have remained commercial as well as critical successes, and the expectations regarding ‘Spirit’ are naturally immense.

Triumph of the human spirit

The shoot of writer-director Ranjith's ‘Spirit' is on in and around the sprawling Choice house in Kochi. Mohanlal plays the lead in the film, along with Shankar Ramakrishnan and Kaniha.

The house has been transformed into a resort called ‘Casa Rosa' for the film. After some shots of Mohanlal near the building, the action shifts to a hall inside the house.

Although the title of the film is a subject of discussion in the media and on various social networking sites, Ranjith clarifies that the film is not just about alcohol and its effects, it is also about the triumph of the human spirit.

Mohanlal's role
“Reghunandanan (Mohanlal) is a laidback person. He was working in a bank when he leaves his job to pursue a career in journalism. He is divorced. His best friends are his former wife Meera (Kaniha) and her husband, Alexy (Shankar Ramakrishnan). An eye-opening incident changes his carefree life, to an extent. He is currently writing a book, a biography titled ‘Spirit.'

“The movie also takes a look at the marital lives of a cross-section of people in society,” says Ranjith, who recently won the national award for the best feature film in Malayalam for his ‘Indian Rupee.'

Although Prakash Raj was originally scheduled to play Alexy, due to various reasons, the role went to Shankar, the scenarist of ‘Urumi' and director of ‘Island Express' one of the 10 films in ‘Kerala Café.'

Says Shankar: “I have never considered acting. Although Ranjith's ‘Leela' was supposed to be my entry into Mollywood, ‘Spirit,' is now my debut film. Alexy, my character in ‘Spirit,' may not look friendly, but he is a nice person. He was a teacher. He quit his job and is now into organic farming and running ‘Casa Rosa.' He is the foster father to Reghunandanan's child.”

Kaniha's role in this film is different from the usual soft-spoken characters she plays. “Here I am bold and make my own decisions in life. Meera is educated, intelligent and is fond of music.”

‘Spirit' is being produced under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. Venu is the cinematographer. Lyrics by Rafeeq Ahmed have been set to tune by Shahabaz Aman.

While talking to fwdlife, the four time national award winning actor, the legend of Indian Cinema, Mohanlal was all cool and soft. The film Spirit is about a fight; an unusual fight; fight between goodness and goodness. Usually, the cinematic theme circles around a war between good and bad. Here, the fight is between goodness and goodness. The suspense element of the film is the way the story is being told.

Alcohol consumption in Kerala is at large, he said. But, the trade of illicit liquor which sprouts up in festival season is a curse to the country. We have to stop it. If the people become more vigil and try to protect the society from such intruders of peace, the spontaneous flow of illicit liquor and drugs sale can be booked to the fullest. People who try to hide something from us are not actually hiding anything, if our eyes are open. So, it’s all in our own self to refrain them from spoiling our own crowd. It’s high time we said no to drugs and illicit liquor.

Prologue

Raghunanthan is a senior journalist in a leading Television channel in Kerala. He is an alcoholic philanthropist. Kerala tops the list in terms of per capita liquor consumption in the country. According to statistics, the average Kerala resident accounts for 8.3 litres of liquor every year – the highest in India, and nearly three times the national average. Apart from this, Kerala stands up in terms of consumption of illicit liquor in India. The illicit liquor trade with its hard roots in the mafia rooms of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, often and especially at festival seasons, the outflow of illicit trade of liquor and spirit is at mayhem. The vibrant journalist in Raghunanthan, who wants to expose the illicit trade of spirit to Kerala, moves on his predator travel hunting his prey and finally wins over the mighty mafia amidst push and pull. Writing an autobiographical novel, Raghunanthan is all cheered up to the final lap in suspense. Meera and Capt Kartha along with Manian, Alexy and Maestri makes ‘spirit’ a lucrative piece of the cherry.

Mohanlal plays the role of the journalist Raghunanthan opposite Kaniha, Thilakan, Madhu and Shankar Ramakrishnan. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor and written by Shankar Ramakrishnan, the film gets all its spirit from the aposthalan director Ranjith. The frames go to celluloid through the eyes of cameraman Venu edited by Vijay Shankar. Yesudas sings in tune with Shahbaz Aman and art is directed by Santhosh Raman.

Film ‘Spirit’ is the story of the psychic inner vibrations and conniption of a man who got sidelined and carped by a more sidelined society

Like the princesse lointaine, the effects and atrocities of her denial, alcohol plays a prominent role in governing a class segment of society
