As expected, Johny Antony's treatment was not good enough for Masters. Script is decent to good, with a fresh idea and a good plot that stays away from the usual Malayalam cop flicks. The story could have been tied up in a better fashion. I would have introduced a sixth murder to bring everything to full circle and tying up the beginning with the end. A better possibility would have been an open ending. Jinu Abraham deserves the pat on the back for his effort.
The direction in the first half is below-average. The script builds up incidents, but it required a skillful director to make it engaging and thrilling enough for the audience. Some of the shots seemed amateurish to say the least. The pace picks up in the second half, culminating in a climax that we could smell a long way away.
Prithviraj has done well. Though I didn't like his looks, his performance was quite good whenever he got the scope. Sadly, there were too few places where he needed to flex his acting muscles. Great to see him without the stiffness that had crept into his acting prior to Indian Rupee. Sasikumar was at total loss. He should have been either cast as a Tamilian or better yet, not cast at all. Insipid performance from him. The girls were used sparingly and fit the bill quite well. Salim Kumar, Biju Menon, and Siddique shone in their brief roles. Salim Kumar once again proves his mettle in a non-comedy role.
Editing was shoddy in the first half and passable in the second. BGM could have been way better, given that its Gopi Sundar at the helm. Camera work also felt a little short of expectation barring a few sequences with Biju Menon. Better stunts could have notched up the thrill quotient.
Masters is a classic case of could have been. A better director could have improvised on the script and made a brilliant film. At the end of the day, Masters just crosses the pass mark and ends up as an above average, watchable flick.
TL;DR: Masters is a watchable flick with an intriguing story and a fresh plot. Definitely worth your money.

The man is simply amazing! He may not have that perfect body but he is what we trainers term ‘functionally fit'.
