കമല്* ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ ജെ.സി. ഡാനിയേലായി പൃഥ്വിരാജ്*
മലയാളസിനിമയുടെ പിതാവും ആദ്യനായികയും ചരിത്രത്തിലും ജീവിതത്തിലും ഒരുപോലെ തിരസ്*കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടതെങ്ങനെയെന്ന അന്വേഷണവുമായി കമല്*ച്ചിത്രം വരുന്നു. 1928ലാണ് മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യസിനിമയായ വിഗതകുമാരന്* ചിത്രീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് .അതിന്റെ രചനയും നിര്*മ്മാണവും മാത്രമല്ല,നായയകവേഷം ചെയ്തതും ജെ സി ഡാനിയലായിരുന്നു. മലയാളസിനിമയുടെ പിതാവെന്ന് പിന്നീടറിയപ്പെട്ട അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ സിനിമയില്* നായികയായി കണ്ടെത്തിയത് തിരുവനന്തപുരം സ്വദേശിനി പി കെ റോസിയെയാണ്.
എന്നാല്* ചിത്രത്തെ ഉള്*ക്കൊള്ളാനോ താഴ്ന്ന ജാതിയില്*പ്പെട്ട റോസിയോടു പൊറുക്കാനോ സവര്*ണ്ണമേധാവിത്വവും തയ്യാറായില്ല. ചിത്രം പ്രദര്*ശിപ്പിച്ച തീയറ്ററിന്റെ സ്*ക്രീന്* കല്ലെറിഞ്ഞുതകര്*ത്തും റോസിയുടെ കുടില്* കത്തിച്ചും അവര്* പ്രതികരിച്ചു. കലാസ്വാദനത്തിനു പുറം തിരിഞ്ഞു നില്*ക്കുന്ന തീവ്രനിലപാടായിരുന്നു അവരുടേത്. ഗത്യന്തരമില്ലാതെ ഡാനിയലിന് സ്വന്തം നാടായ പാളയംകോട്ടയിലേക്ക് പലായനം ചെയ്യേണ്ടിവന്നു. റോസി രാക്കുരാമാനം തമിഴ്*നാട്ടിലേക്ക് ഒളിച്ചോടി രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.
ചിത്രനിര്*മ്മാണത്തെത്തുടര്*ന്ന് വന്* കടബാധ്യതയില്*പ്പെട്ട ഡാനിയലിന് പട്ടത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം സ്ഥാപിച്ച ട്രവന്*കൂര്* നാഷണല്* പിക്*ചേഴ്*സെന്ന മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യസ്റ്റുഡിയോ വില്*ക്കേണ്ടതായി വന്നു. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അന്ത്യനാളുകള്* വരെ പിന്നീടദ്ദേഹത്തെ അവഗണനയും ദാരിദ്ര്യവും വേട്ടയാടി. കലയെ സ്*നേഹിച്ചു എന്ന ഒറ്റക്കാരണത്താല്* ജീവിതം തന്നെ തുലഞ്ഞ മലയാളസിനിമയുടെ പിതാവിനെയും ആദ്യനായികയെയും സിനിമാചരിത്രത്തില്* രേഖപ്പെടുത്താനാണ് സംവിധായകന്* കമല്* ഉദ്യമിക്കുന്നത്.
ചിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള സംവിധായകന്റെ ആലോചനയും അന്വേഷണങ്ങളും തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് നാലു കൊല്ലത്തോളമായി. റോസിയുടെ ജീവിതം ഇതിവൃത്തമാക്കി മാധ്യമപ്രവര്*ത്തകന്* വിനു എബ്രഹാം എഴുതിയ നോവലും ചേലങ്ങാട് ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണന്* തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ജെ സി ഡാനിയലിന്റെ ജീവചരിത്രവും പ്രധാന അവലംബങ്ങളാക്കിയാണ് തിരക്കഥാരചന നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.
ജെ സി ഡാനിയലിനും റോസിക്കും എന്തായിരിക്കും സംഭവിച്ചതെന്ന അന്വേഷണമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന് ഉപോല്*ബലകമായ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചതെന്ന് കമല്* വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നു. ഒപ്പം മലയാളസിനിമയുടെ തുടക്കം മുതല്* വര്*ത്തമാനകാലസാഹചര്യങ്ങള്* വരെയുള്ള നാള്*വഴിപ്പട്ടികയുടെ വിലയിരുത്തല്* കൂടിയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രം. പ്രൈം ടൈം സിനിമയുടെ ബാനറില്* കമലും ഉബൈദും ചേര്*ന്നാണ് സിനിമ നിര്*മ്മിക്കുന്നത്.
'എക്കാലത്തും ഇങ്ങനെയുള്ള ആളുകളേക്കുറിച്ചോര്*ക്കേണ്ടത് കലാരംഗത്ത് പ്രവര്*ത്തിക്കുന്നവരുടെ ധര്*മ്മമാണ്. കലക്കുവേണ്ടി ജീവിച്ച് കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളിലുടെമരിച്ച മലയാള സിനിമയുടെ പിതാവിനെപ്പറ്റി ആരെങ്കിലും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തണമല്ലോ. അതാണ് ഞാന്* ആലോചിച്ചത്.ജെ സി ഡാനിയല്* ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആരും അംഗീകരിച്ചില്ല. മലയാളസിനിമയും അംഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.
സര്*ക്കാരും അംഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. വിഗതകുമാരനെന്ന സിനിമയെക്കുറിച്ചുതന്നെ ആര്*ക്കുമൊന്നുമറിയില്ല.വിഗതകുമാരന്റെ പ്രിന്റ് ലഭ്യമല്ലാത്തതിന്റെയും അതു നശിക്കാനിടയായതിന്*െയും സാഹചര്യമെന്താണെന്ന് ഈ സിനിമ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.' ഫിക്ഷന്* അധിഷ്ഠിതമായി രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന സിറ്റ്വേഷനുകളെക്കുറിച്ച് കമല്* പറയുന്നു.
ജെ സി ഡാനിയലായി അഭിനയിക്കുന്നത് പൃഥ്വിരാജാണ്. വിഗതകുമാരന്* നിര്*മ്മിക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് ഡാനിയലിന് ഇരുപത്തിയെട്ടുവയസ്സായിരിന്നു.ആറടി പൊക്കമുള്ള അരോഗദൃഢഗാത്രനായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോയും പൃഥ്വിരാജിന്റെ രൂപഘടനയും തമ്മില്* സാമ്യത ഏറെയാണ്.അങ്ങനെയാണ് നായകവേഷത്തിലേക്ക് പൃഥ്വിരാജിനെ നിശ്ചയിക്കുന്നത് .1925-30 കാലയളവാണ് ചിത്രത്തില്* പരാമര്*ശവിധേയമാകുന്നത്.പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട മറ്റൊരു കഥാപാത്രം ചേലങ്ങാടു ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണനെന്ന ജീവചരിത്രകാരനാണ്.അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അന്വേഷണത്തിലുടെയാണ് കഥാഗതിയുടെ ചുരുളഴിയുന്നത്. ശ്രീനിവാസനാണ് ഈ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

Prithviraj to play J C Daniel in Kamal’s film!

This is a film announcement that has got us all attentive. Prithviraj would play J C Daniel, the legendary film maker who had scripted, produced and acted in the first Malayalam film ever, ‘Vigathakumaran’ in director Kamal’s new film. Perhaps the history of Malayalam cinema would never forget its first film maker ever, or his heroine Rosy, whose lives were trampled upon for making the first film in the language.
Kamal’s film would lead us on a journey back to 1928, and the director has been researching on the topic for the last four years. The film has been scripted on the basis of a novel on Rosy’s life that was written by Vinu Abraham, and the life history of J C Daniel himself, that was penned by Chelangadu Gopalakrishnan.
The director feels that Prithviraj has a striking resemblance to J C Daniel, who was twenty eight when he made the film. Danile was a strapping 6 feet tall man, and through the film, Kamal would attempt to find out what eventually happened to J C Daniel and Rosy. Easily one of the most exciting announcements that has been made in recent times, we are all excited at this welcome news!

Had read somewhere that the first malayalam film 'Vigathakumaran' was a huge flop. JC Daniel sold all of his property and got 4 lakhs with which he bought equipments and set up Travancore National Pictures. When the film flopped, he had to sell off the studio and all belongings and lived rest of his life as a village dentist in Tamil Nadu. The heroine Rosy was a converted Dalit and portrayed a Nair lady in the movie for which she was not allowed to enter the theatre, her house was set on fire & she had to run off with a lorry driver to Tamil Nadu.
If taken with passion & without compromises, this could become a class movie and a milestone for Malayalam cinema. But I think that the fate of this movie will be same as that of Vigathakumaran.
