    Default Spirit-My Review

    Theater: EKM- Cinemax (Oberon Mall)
    Show: 9 am, June 15 2012
    Status: HF

Malayalam Cinema is on a high with young directors coming up with lots of new generations films. But for a veteran like Ranjith maintains a different space and the viewers always expect something new from him especially after his recent outings like Pranchiyetan and Indian Rupee. Has 'Spirit' met the expectations level?? Please do more..

Story: Like the title says, the movie deals with the life of an alcoholic, Reghunandan (Mohanlal), who is a divorcee due to his 24*7 drinking habits. Still he maintains a friendly relationship with his ex-wife (Kaniha) who is happily married to Alexi ('Urumi' fame scriptwriter Shankar Ramakrishnan). Reghu decides to stop drinking at some point of time and what follows is a predictable ending.

Credits to Ranjith for once again coming up with a relevant theme which takes a dig at the life of a common malayalee and the side-effects he face for being an alcoholic. The movie was very much engaging till first half but starts losing it's steam towards the later half and becomes highly predictable.

The movie banks heavily on Mohanal's performance who once again proved there is no one to beat him in drunkard acts. It was a pleasure to watch him in such kind of roles who seemed to be easy in delivering it on the screen. Nandu as plumber comes up with a notable performance in a Ranjith movie yet again after Thirakatha.

All the supporting cast including Thilakan, Madhu, Shankar Ramakrishnan( who makes a dream debut), Tini Tom, Siddarth, Students-only program fame Govindan Kutty were good. Lena was fantastic in her small as a female cop while the Kaniha could have done better.

Technically the script was a bit shaky compared to Ranjith's previous outings and the typical Ranjith flavor dialogs was not present as much as expected but he manages to keep the viewers interested at most part of time. Venu's cinematography was fine while Shabaz Aman's music was not upto Indian Rupee.

Overall, Spirit is a definitely worth a watch for Mohanlal's brilliant performance but Ranjith's class was not there completely (maybe because of my over expectation).

    Verdict: A fine one-time watch
