Default Bachelor Party review by Perumthachan

Saw ‘Bachelor Party’ at Santosh theatre, Mavelikara.

The movie starts off with a muthassi telling a kadha that ends with a moral which is the baseline of the movie. The robbery scene was taken rather tamely maybe because Amal Neerad must have realized that children do not walk stylishly in slow-motion. The ‘Ayyapan’ song was taken pretty good though it seemed to remind of the famous Fahad-chasing-Sreeni teaser for ‘Chappa Kurishu’. With the end of the title song and credits, 20 years have passed. The present situation of the five grown-up boys is shown which is such that three are on one side and two on the opposite.

Indrajith was the pick of the lot chiefly because he had the best one-liners. Though some of them did not click as required, the other ones were enough to raise laughs. Rehman comes in second with his subtle expressions and remaining share of the one-liners. The dubbing by Shoby Thilakan seemed outdated. A new crankier voice could have been used. Vinayakan would be my pick next. As like in ‘Best Acor’, though he has little to say and do, whatever much of there is, he had done it brilliantly. Kalabhavan Mani had to look menacing and ‘bhai’ of the group, so he was bereft of any of his humorous skills. Asif was pretty okay with his part. The costumes, contact lenses, ponytails and accessories were funky enough to portray the cool-boy attitudes for the five boys. Ashish Vidyarthi as Chettiyar seemed a clichéd Madurai brothel-owner. John Vijay, who did a good job in ‘Mouna Guru’ was wasted here. Neither was Remya Nambeeshan’s song sexy enough nor did she have a dialogue to say. Nithya Menon really underplayed her role which seemed perfect for such a boys-all film. Prithviraj was the ultimate waste of the movie. Why does he require the money is not explained and why was he required in the movie is something which I cannot explain. Padmapriya did some sexy gyrations while having kappa puzhukku.

The cinematography was, obviously, top-notch. BGM was in sync with the feel of the movie. The first half rests solely on the shoulders of Indrajith and Rehman and their tales and taunts. The second half was a tad lagging, boring, tiring as if somehow to reach the climax. The shoot-out scenes were taken in chic. Eastern Kashmiri chilli powder was used instead of ketchup and when it sprayed out from the bodies, the shoot-out seemed like a PC game. Of course, many bullets were required to fell a guy, but then, this is not a Adoor or Sathyan movie…it is a Amal Neerad flick and his characters defy gravity and biology. In short, I liked the movie.
