Football's X-men take their final bow in Curitiba today as Spain’s Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso say goodbye to the world stage they made their own for six years.
The pair were in Vienna when Spain ended a 44-year wait for a trophy, they were in Johannesburg as they became world champions, and they were in Kiev two years ago as they completed a hat-trick of international trophies.
Xavi was the self-confessed Premier League fan who could have joined Manchester United and who toldSportsmailthat Paul Scholes was the most complete midfielder of the last decade.
And Xabi Alonso embraced English football in five years at Liverpool where he won the Champions League before returning to Real Madrid to lead them to the same prize.
They taught us a thing or two in their six years of domination – primarily that being brave in midfield didn’t just mean flying into challenges. It also meant never being scared of having possession. ‘The frightened player is the one who hides from the ball’ was their message.'
The Spanish Word ‘rondo’ seemed to be introduced into English football’s vocabulary as Spain’s influence spread. ‘It teaches you the responsibility of keeping the ball and the shame of losing it,’ Xavi said of the ‘piggy in the middle’ or ‘two versus five’ passing drill that was the basis of every training session.
'What is it with the English and tackling?' added Alonso in an interview with Sportsmail in 2011. 'It is not really a quality, it's more something you are forced to resort to when you don't have the ball.'
If there were aspects of the English game that neither could grasp they both embraced its essence and for the most part English football enjoyed their well-earned success.
Xavi had to wait for recognition in Spain let alone beyond its borders. It was only when Luis Aragones decided to dismantle a side of habitual tournament failures and build one around the perpetual pass and move masters did he rise to the top – he was 30 when he won the World Cup.

Luxembourg 0-4 Spain: Costa opens international account
The Brazil-born striker scored his first goal for his adopted nation to ensure la Roja bounced back from their defeat to Slovakia.
Diego Costa opened his goalscoring account for Spain as they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Luxembourg on Sunday night.
The striker, who had not scored for his adopted homeland since defecting from Brazil in February, netted Spain's third goal in a routine victory.
Having lost 2-1 to Slovakia on Thursday, coach Vicente Del Bosque named the youngest side of his six-year tenure, including goalkeeper David de Gea in place of out-of-form captain Iker Casillas.
But it was one of the older heads that opened the scoring as David Silva put them ahead after 27 minutes at the Stade Josy Barthel.
Paco Alcacer then doubled the lead shortly before half-time with his third goal in as many competitive Spain games, before Costa ended his international drought with a scrappy effort.
Juan Bernat capped his debut with a late strike to add gloss to the scoreline for the much-changed European Championship holders.
The win puts Spain in second in Group C behind leaders Slovakia, who have won three from three so far.
Spain unsurprisingly dominated the ball from the off, though Costa was worryingly unable to convert a host of chances that fell his way.
The Chelsea man fired wide in the 18th minute as the visitors toiled in breaking down the five-man Luxembourg defence, though they finally managed it with a moment of individual brilliance.

Once he starts scoring it wont stop i think
But still lot of issues for VDB..he shud be brave n plan long term n not be afraid of benching big names...Costa not getting supply/isolated upfront mostly vn opposition block the small guys Iniesta/silva/pedro passing around!!

Lot of CAM's in the team.. not one true orchestrator... Thiago return will be huge boost as i think he will be crucial to the team.. as he have skill set to orchestrate play like Xavi..thats in case if they are planning to continue the same system

Isco is a man inspired. The 22-year-old set Spain on their way to a 3-0 win over Belarus with a wonderful opening goal and later left the pitch to a standing ovation. On a cool night in Huelva, fans had seen a glimpse of the future.
On fantastic form for Real Madrid recently in the absence of Gareth Bale through injury, Isco's inclusion has seen coach Carlo Ancelotti change to a 4-4-2 formation and adopt a philosophy much more about passing and possession than their usual counter-attacking style.
Vicente del Bosque must have been an interested observer because the 63-year-old coach opted for something similar on Saturday night. Isco, left out of the World Cup squad last summer, started in a midfield four with Koke, Sergio Busquets and Santi Cazorla.
It worked well and Spain dominated from the outset. Much more fluid in the absence of Diego Costa, the new generation impressed early on but needed a moment of sheer brilliance from Isco to take the lead.
There appeared little danger when the Madrid man picked the ball up outside the area, but the 22-year-old curled the ball effortlessly into the top corner and the goalkeeper hadn't even moved as it hit the back of the net. It was his first goal for Spain on his his first start. Surely the first of many.
The youngster missed out on the trip to Brazil in the summer because of his role as a substitute at Madrid. However, he has been in fine form with his club in recent weeks, putting in the kind of displays that saw him win the Golden Boy award for the world's best young player in his time at Malaga. Spain fans will be happy to see that the early signs suggest he is capable of transferring that to the national team. With Isco in the team, Madrid have played some of their finest football in years and Spain's slick showing on Saturday was a significant step up from their poor performances in recent times.
As well as his superb strike, the midfielder made Spain tick with his precise passing and was always available to receive possession. He also worked hard defensively, an aspect of his game that has improved dramatically during his time at Madrid.
