Ayalum Njanum Thammil Review :
"MARUBHUMIYILE VERUM CHATTALMAZHA MATHRAM "
Theatre : Carnival, Angamaly.
Time :10.45 PM, 19/10/2012
Status : Housefull
PLOT:
“Ayalum Njanum Thammil” is the story of Dr. Ravi Tharakan, a character portrayed by Prithviraj. In the beginning of the story we see a middle-aged Dr. Ravi falling victim for the agitation of a furious mob as the girl whom he operates on ‘without’ her parents’ consent dies in the surgery. This is the first scene of the movie which, according to the newspaper advertisements of the movie published on the release day, has a very remarkable significance in the remaining part of the story.
After this incident the narrative all of a sudden switches to flashback mode. The flashback shows Dr. Ravi’s college days. Dr. Ravi had a lover during his studies. He also had some friends and the one most close to him, a character portrayed by Narein -the eternal substitute, was also as lazy and careless as his friend. This flashback eats up the major chunk of the first half.
The second half has Dr. Ravi working in a hospital in Munnar under the supervision of Dr. Samuel, a character portrayed by Prathap Pothen. Dr. Samuel is really dedicated to his profession. Dr. Ravi fails to marry his college day lover Sainu as he does not reach the register marriage venue in time. Dr. Ravi began loving his profession and dedicates his life for it.
ANALYSIS
PERFORMANCE: Prithviraj as Dr. Ravi and Prathap Pothen as Dr. Samuel are fantabulous. The latter outshines the former in certain scenes. Ramya Nambeesan, Salim Kumar and Kalabhavan Mani also make remarkable performance.
Narein, Samvritha Sunil, Sukumari and Reema Kallingal have done justice to their characters but these characters have nothing much to do in the story and do not give any scope for them to perform.
DIRECTION: Lal Jose has always impressed me as a director of realistic movies. “Ayalum Njanum Thammil” does not disappoint in this regard but is never equal to some of Lal Jose’s earlier works. He has presented the available story in the best possible way.
STORY: Story is above average. Flashbacks do not uncover any suspense or generate any twist. In fact there is no turning point in the story. The only plus point is that the story does not create any boredom but then the credit for it goes to Lal Jose’s direction and Jomon’s cinematography.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Astonishing.
SONGS: Disappointing.
SOME QUESTIONS THAT CAME TO MY MIND AFTER THE SHOW WERE:
1.Is the first part of the movie very relevant in the remaining part of the story as the makers claim?
2.How relevant is the title “Ayalum Njanum Thammil”?
3.Doesn’t the movie have some similarities with one of the director’s earlier works?
Rating : 3/5
BO Verdict : Hit or Above
