12th March, 2013.
TVM - Kalabhavan, 9.15 PM show.
A decent status.
Finally, got an opportunity to watch this movie. The film is based on
the life story of J.C Daniel who is the pioneer of Malayalam Cinema.
It gives a vivid account of his life and his efforts to make the movie
Vighathakumaran - The Lost Child and the misfortunes he had to suffer for doing so.
The movie is not a classic at all. But, it is a very good one and most importantly, very informative also.
Eventhough it is a bit slow paced, director Kamal has succeeded to draw the attention of his viewers.
A brilliant comeback from the veteran director. Big salutes to him for the attempt and the way he recollected all the available resources during
the early 30s and 40s and managed to make a good package.
Cinematography was also very good. All the sets used in the movie were
attractive and pleasing. It felt as if we were travelling through those
old periods. The old Trivandrum slang was also well managed by the actors.
Coming to the performance, its Prithvi and Chandini all the way.
2 back to back brilliant performances from Prithvi. (ANT and Celluloid)
No one else could have done this role with this perfection.
All the 3 get-ups were very well handled accordingly. Variation in the
tone was also great.
Director deserves a special mention for extracting the best out of a
new comer, Chandini. An excellent debut for her. Brilliant performance.
Mamtha was also good. After a long time, saw a typical Sreeni touch
in the performance of Sreenivasan.
Music and BGM deserves a special mention. M.Jayachandran's 2 songs
were brilliant and matched the situation. BGM was also excellent.
The movie has lot of heart touching sequences. Chandini being thrown
out of the Capitol, Daniel's old age etc..
Climax was also very good..
Coming to the negative side,
The movie is a bit slow paced which may not fit to the taste of all the
viewers, and also heard certain comments from the audience about this.
With this brilliant theme, the crew behind the film should have tried a
step forward to make this a classic. But, it did not happen.
On the whole, CELLULOID is a very good movie. Eventhough it is not
a classic, one should not miss this - atleast to know the past periods
of Malayalam cinema and the father of malayalam cinema.
My Verdict : Brave attempt, very good and informative.
After watching this movie, one can say that Malayalam Cinema
has a very good and old culture which had been lasting for many years..
thanks to the whole crew for the enlightment..
Rating : 7.5/10
Verdict : HIT
As a Lalettan fan, I was really pleased to see Narasimham release day
on screen. Happy that he was also a part of the movie, indirectly..
Claps after the movie.

A child is like a butterfly in the wind. Some can fly higher than others.
But each one flies the best it can. Why compare one against the other? Each one is unique, special and beautiful.

"Prithvi is an actor who is like wet clay and in the hands of the right potter
moulds itself into the most remarkable shape that one can think of."
