Mammootty introduced Lal Jose to the filmworld as an independent director with 'Maruvathoor Kanavu' and since then Lal Jose has never looked back. Yes, there were ups & downs for him as the team's previous film 'Pattalam' turned out to be a flop and consistency was not completely there. But Lal Jose seems to be in top form recently with the success of 'Diamond Necklace' & 'Ayalum Njanum Thammil' and he continues to carry that form in 'Immanuel' also though it is not a class product.
Story: It's all about Immanuel (Mammootty), who works in a publishing firm but loses his job and joins a corporate life insurance firm where all aims for profit and does not give importance to human values. How Immanuel manages to cope up with working in such a company forms the rest of the movie.
The story is pretty simple and straight forward but it throws a though provoking message and Lal Jose creates all the characters as real and relatable. Script by debutant Vijesh is commendable but screenplay could have been better as there were some portions which lagged here and there , especially 10 minutes before and after the interval. But Lal Jose somehow manages to fill the gaps and holds the movie and Vijesh should be grateful for having a director like Lal Jose in his 1st movie itself.
Now coming to the performances, it's been a long while since I saw Mammootty in full form throughout the movie. He got completely transformed into the character of Immanuel and this has to be his best show since 'Pranchiyetan' & 'Best Actor' which released almost 2 years back. Fahad Fasil was apt as the cunning boss of Immanuel and even with limited screen space he was able to make an impact. Other supporting cast like P.Balachandran, Sukumari amma, Muktha, Reenu etc all did their roles pretty well.
Afsal Yusuf's music and background score matches the movie's mood well and Pradeep Nair's cinematography is also pretty decent while editing could have been a bit better. Overall, Immanuel may not be something exceptional but it's definitely worth a watch and hats off to Lal Jose for converting an average/above average script to a decent watchable flick.
Verdict: Feel-good stuff
