“Project Crystal” is Nokia’s relaunch into consumer hardware space under HERE

We have been posting about Nokia’s future plans which include consumer hardware and services based on what we come to know from our sources and job postings. Now, we have some more information for you.

It seems Nokia had started planning for impending Nokia-Microsoft deal in advance by shifting some of its top designers and highly-skilled team from D&S division to emerging devices team in CTO office. This team never existed in past, so it is easy to assume that it was a vehicle to retain the talented few with Nokia and the team had names like Peter Skillman, Hans Peter Brondmo, and Axel Meyer. Now all of them are part of HERE. Similarly, many joined Nokia Technologies team too.

Now coming to what these talented design people are doing in HERE and Nokia Technologies. Per our source, Nokia will see a relaunch into consumer hardware space with what is codenamed as “Project Crystal”. Nokia has an alternative product team under Here brand umbrella and Here will launch the wearable and location-based lifestyle products. Interestingly, we have reported Nokia’s intention of bringing consumer hardware under HERE’s Everyday Adventures brand from a job posting as well.

Our source also claims that Nokia may not be able to sell smart wearable or devices directly under Nokia brand, until 2015 / 2016, due to the deal ( we are a bit doubtful though ). But Here brand being independent of Nokia won’t violate the deal clause. So, again it looks like that new Nokia consumer devices may come from HERE first, as reported earlier. Though, we have also reported Nokia working on something related to Android and camera, which seems to be under Nokia Technologies.

Nokia May Rejoin Smartphone Market With Android Devices, Tip Job Listings

When Nokia completed the sale of its mobile business to Microsoft earlier this year, the acquisition meant that the Finnish giant would not manufacture mobile phones for a while, and concentrate on its telecommunications and services business in the interim.

However, if newly-spotted job listings on LinkedIn are to be believed, then Nokia is hiring engineers, designers and camera specialists for upcoming devices.

PhoneArena, citing a Russian publication, notes that out of the posted LinkedIn job listings, few have already closed - indicating that the Finnish company found the fitting professionals. The report claims that one of the job openings at LinkedIn for a photography engineer says that the company is in search of "a mobile photography engineer with experience writing camera drivers for Android."

The spotted requirement kicks-off a new debate about whether Nokia is considering coming back to the phone business, and that too with an Android running device.

Lastly, the report suggested that the hiring process is being carried out by team that designed the recently released Nokia Z Launcher, which is compatible with smartphones running Android 4.1 or higher. What do you think about the possible re-entry by Nokia into the smartphone, specifically Android smartphone market? Let us know in the comments section below.

Microsoft announced the biggest job cuts in its 39-year old history - with some 18,000 jobs being axed, of which 12,500 were from the Nokia acquisition.

The Redmond giant further dumped its Android experiment and also announced that the Nokia X series of phones would be making the transition to Windows Phone as Lumia devices. For those unaware, Microsoft's Nokia had first announced the X series of phones running a heavily customised version of Android at MWC this year.

Recently, Nokia Corporation reported higher profits and earnings after the acquisition of its mobile business by Microsoft. The company announced that its Q2 profit rose 20 percent.

Nokia to Buy Part of Panasonic's Wireless Network Business

HELSINKI—Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia Corp. NOK1V.HE -1.43% said Thursday it is planning to acquire Panasonic Corp.'s 6752.TO -0.16% third generation wireless base station business.

Nokia's network arm has signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire a part of the third generation, or LTE/3G, wireless network business of Panasonic System Networks Company Limited, Nokia said in a statement.

No transaction price was disclosed. Last month Kyodo News International reported that the deal is valued at several billion yen or tens of millions of dollars, citing unnamed sources.

As part of the deal the fixed assets and customer contracts of Panasonic's wireless base station business will be transferred to Nokia Networks in Japan, including Panasonic employees involved in the business.

Panasonic has been supplying network technology and solutions to NTT DoCoMo Inc. 9437.TO -0.33% which is Japan's largest mobile service provider.

"The acquisition of part of Panasonic's wireless network business would further strengthen our mobile broadband portfolio and add significant value for Japanese operators," said Ashish Chowdhary, executive vice president for Asia, Middle East and Africa with Nokia Networks.

Nokia and Panasonic plan to complete the deal by the end of September. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval, and it is expected to close by January 1, 2015.

New Nokia 'Lumia 730' to include 1 GB of RAM, Quad-core processor and dual-SIM

The Lumia 730, known internally as "Superman," is a forthcoming successor to the mid-range Lumia 720 from early 2013. Yesterday, the first photos of the device came forward, along with the new firmware, codenamed 'Debian Red.' At the time, the one piece of the puzzle missing came down to specifications. Luckily, we now have some more information to connect the dots.

According to our source of the original photos the Lumia 730 looks to be the ideal mid-range Windows Phone 8.1 device, as the specifications (if accurate) should please most at this price range.

We should caution that these specifications are unofficial and therefore could change.
    Lumia 73x "Superman"

    4.7-inch (likely FWVGA at 854 x 480, but possibly 720P)
    1 GB of RAM
    Quad-core processor (unknown speed)
    8GB internal storage
Micro SD expansion up to 128 GB
    6.1 MP rear camera
    5MP front-facing camera
    Dual SIM

Although the processor speed is unknown, it is likely Snapdragon 400 with a 1.6 or 1.7 GHz CPU. It seems unlikely that Microsoft would opt for the higher-end Snapdragon 800 in this series due to pricing constraints. Notwithstanding, a user report claims it feels "really smooth" when compared to the Lumia 920.

The 1 GB of RAM, if proven accurate, could make this phone a sleeper hit if it is priced right. In the past, Nokia has preferred 512 MB of RAM for their lower tier phones. As the original Lumia 720 came with 512 MB of RAM, the chances the Lumia 730 would arrive with the same was a distinct possibility. With 1 GB of RAM and a beefier processor, the Lumia 730 could install any app or game on the Windows Phone store, something that 512 MB phones could not.

Adding a dual SIM to this line also gives it a lead for emerging markets, especially in India and China, where dual SIMs are the norm. It is unknown if there is a Lumia 730 (single SIM) and a Lumia 735 (dual SIM), paralleling the Lumia 630 and Lumia 635 series.

When it comes to the camera, Tom Warren at the Verge reports that the Lumia 730 comes with a 5 MP front-facing camera, which is ideal for the growing 'selfie' trend. Indeed, photos can be saved at 4 MP, suggesting that it is in the 4.1 to 5 MP range for the actual camera. As to the rear camera, Nokia appears to be sticking with 6.1 MP as photos save at 5 MP (16:9) and 6 MP (4:3). The original Lumia 720 had one of the best lower-tier cameras we have used, often taking super sharp photos that were better than the Lumia 820. Nokia later went on to use the same camera module in their Lumia 2520 tablet.

Finally, micro SD expansion and 8 GB of internal storage matches the Lumia 720's specifications, so it makes sense to mirror that with the Lumia 730. Combined with Windows Phone 8.1's ability to have apps and games installed to the micro SD card, users can get up to 136 GB of total storage.

We reached to some of our trusted sources for more info about Lumia 730 and we can now tell you that device may carry a price of around EUR 259, when it will be announced. The announcement is tipped to happen around 3rd-4th week of August, though it may get delayed a bit too.

In India, it may be priced around 14,599 INR when launched. It seems Microsoft doesn’t want to over price it and the pricing for all upcoming devices will be more sensible than before.
