Interesting name, the promos, and the initial reports drew me to the film. Interesting thread surrounding the life of a gynecologist and four pregnant women around him. Lal plays the role to perfection. Nothing new to him, but he delivers the requisite calm and firm demeanor expected by the character. The 4 pregnant women were average to good. Geetha got a good role after a very long time. In the late 80s or early 90s we would have had a film centering on her character alone. Sadly, the current cinema goers sensibilities and the lack of talent from our film makers does not allow for something like that in 2013. Still the capsule track is engaging and emotionally clinching at times. Sandra Thomas was used quite intelligently by the director. Limited screen space to tell her story and its never the focal point. More like a wrapper around the whole film. Sanusha's track is probably the most important along with Geetha. Teenage pregnancy. Sanusha has done an ok job. Nothing special, but still decent. But there could have been a lot more touching moments had there been better actresses in place of Sanusha and Asha Sharath. The suspense is guessable from the beginning, but thankfully its never the focal point. The reveal animations are quite well done and nicely used by the director instead of our regular flashback sequences. Rima's story is a welcome comic relief in the proceedings. I am not very familiar with Kasargod accent, but from what little I have heard, Rima has done a nice job. Good performance. Her chemistry with her brother is excellent along with Aju. Aju get a more subdued role and more or less nails it. Welcome change from his usual stuff.
One particular reason why the film hit quite close to home is mainly because this year I have been in the company of quite a few pregnant friends and cousins along with the usual pressure from our families for a baby. The only gripe with the story is that there is nothing about a normal pregnant woman or any generic issues that they face. Script is quite engaging though takes its own sweet time to get to the point. Some of the dialogues are flowery but thankfully limited to Zachariya, but there are quite a few witty one liners. Direction is good, some of the shots and angles are nicely done with some crisp editing. Would have been hell of an effort required with so many baby shots. Camera is also good with some good lighting in place. The two songs are quite good. Veyil Chillayil is an excellent rock ballad.
TL;DR: Zachariyayude Garbhinikal is an interesting film about a unique theme packaged quite well.
Rating: Good (3.5/5)
