Mohanlal is not having a good year now.So far none of his films have done well critically or in the BO.On the other hand we have Jeethu Joseph the hotshot young director who is having a good time this year.So as far as recent success goes the combination of these two does seem a bit odd. There has been many rumours circulating about this film..Is it a family story??Is it a thriller??And more importantly is it any good???Surprisingly the answer to all three questions is big healthy YES!!
Drishyam is the story of Georgekutty and his family.Georgekutty is a cable orperator/farmer residing in Rajakkad with his wife and two daughters.Though he doesn't have an education beyond primary level and he is a miser people like him.He is a movie fanatic and his dream is to save enough money to purchase the local movie theatre. In the first hour and so we establish these points.Upto this part Drishyam looks like an ordinary family film which traverses through familiar paths with some light humour added for good measure. But towards the interval something unexpected happens. This "incident" threatens the safety and well being of George's family. He must now rely on himself to get his family to come out of this unpleasant situation.Does he succeed??If he does at what cost???To know more go and watch the film...
The positives first.Mohanlal is absolutely fantastic as George. He plays "the ordinary man caught in an extraordinary situation" with passion and conviction.Jithu George has created a character which is relatable and Mohanlal has done justice to that role.I did have some worries about Meena and the kids.Thankfully my worries were false. These three ladies have done decent to good work here.Among the other supporting players Shajon who plays a corrupt cop is effective.Jithu's confidence seems to be increasing with each film.He managed to raise the bar which Memories has set.I am eagerly waiting for his next project...
The screenplay is very good and the dialogues are mostly sharp.Eventhough the runtime is close to three hours the movie never lags or feels stretched. In the second half Jeethu cranks up the tension big time keeping the characters and the viewers on their toes. There are no unwanted heroisms or sentiments which is a welcome change.Really nitpicking there are some faults in the film. The portions leading upto "The Incident" seem a little shoddy compared to the rest of the film. Also Asha Sharath is a peculiar casting choice.I won't say that she messed up her role but someone more competitive(Revathy perhaps) might have been a more apt choice..
Summing up "Drishyam" lives upto it's tagline and it's a very good family drama disguised as a thriller(Or is it the other way around??) which stays with you for a while.I think this will satisfy all kinds of audiences and has a good future in the BO.For a Mohanlal fan Drishyam is a treat which must not be missed..Lalettan is back folks...Go and Enjoy.................
