Thanks Ajith
When I saw the trailer and posters of 1983 I was expecting a simple underdog sports movie. But half an our into the movie I knew that I was in for something other than what I expected.Being different is supposed to be good..Right???
Or is it Bad???
The film begins with the visuals of Sachin's retirement.Soon the narration starts. The film is basically Rameshan's(Nivin Pauly) story. In 1983 a 10 year old Rameshan watched Indian team becoming the kings of cricket. Then we follow Rameshan's life through his teens, youth and middle age(sort of).We see him wooing a girl, winning cricket matches failing in exams, facing setbacks in life and inspite of all this we see him chasing his dreams again through his son.
The first half moves at a good pace with lots of funny moments thrown in.The local cricket matches are recreated beautifully.Almost any guy can relate to and enjoy those scenes. After the interval the pace is a bit slower but it never becomes dull or boring. The songs are ok and they don't act as speed breakers.
Talking about performances Nivin Pauly has done a good job.He has managed to step away from the chocolate boy image. This role is a remainder that he needs to be taken very seriously as an actor.Among the supporting cast Anoop Menon,Saiju Kurup etc. have done good jobs.Nikki Galrani has nothing much to do other than look pretty which she does decently. There is another important female character.I don't know that actress's name. But she was pretty good. Her chemistry with Nivin was good.
Overall 1983 will probably satisfy most and cricket fanatics will love this.If you worship Sachin you will clap many times during this film.I will not call this a must watch film or anything but it's definitely worth a trip to the theatre.
Last but not least this movie shows that Nivin could be the dark horse among the younger actors....
My Rating:6.5/10
