Not a perfect adaptation,but a good attempt from the debut director!
It aint a piece of cake to come up with a movie which matches the zeal & intensity of a well-received & cherished novel.Adding to the complication,when it's penned by someone like Vaikom Muhammad Basheer with immense care & detail,it becomes too difficult a task for any experienced hand in cinema.Taking this fact into consideration,Balyakalasakhi eventhough not perfect is nevertheless a good attempt from newbie Pramod Payyanoor to present the immortal romance between Majeed & Suhara on screen.There are numerous occasions which are hearty & well presented by Pramod which makes the movie an engaging watch.The visuals by Hari Nair are brilliant & shot very well which does have the job.Another major highlight of the movie is the performance by the actors & none disappoints,a rare case these days.Its evident that the director has utilized his vast experience in the field of drama for bringing out the best out of the cast.Full marks for Pramod on this regard.The brisk pace of the movie & music of the movie can be pointed out as some other positives the movie.Coming to the weak side,the editing should have been better and unnecessary trimming must have been avoided as more detail could have helped conceive the intensity of the love & made the movie more lovable.The result is not a perfect romance,but in addition a mix of romance,social drama,a bit of political drama & most importantly the struggle of Majeed as an individual.Overall,Balyakalasakhi is an entertaining movie worth paying money in all respects.
Performances::
___________
*Mammooty was brilliant as both Majeed & His Father.For most parts,its a cakewalk for him.
*Isha Talwar,Meena & Kavitha Nair,Tanusree Ghosh were good.
*Parambrata Chatterjee,Sasi Kumar & Seema Biswas were impressive.
*The kids deserve special mention for their matured acting.Too cute n brilliant.
Some +Ves ::
_________
*Perfect Casting & Performances.
*Music.
*Cinematography.
Some -Ves::
___________
*More detail could have been provided to portray the romance between Majeed & Suhara by avoiding unnecessary trimming.
*Editing.Many sharp cuts come in between.
Verdict::Comparing with the classic novel,it should be admitted that Balyakalasakhi slighly lacks the intensity & depth in presenting the romance between Majeed & Suhara.I felt as if the movie,in the process gave more importance to present the struggles of Majeed & the social scenario of those times in comparison with the novel,which I guess is due to the needless cuts done.For the noted reason I'm expecting to catch the untrimmed version on theatres once its out.At the end of the day Balyakalasakhi may not be a perfect adaptation of the novel,but nonetheless an entertaining movie worth watching with some really interesting moments.Go for it!
