Can anyone pull a rabbit out of an empty hat?
Debutant Director Jude Antony does exactly that in Om Shanthi Oshana!.......Out of a simple, unassuming, less dramatic, clichéd, predictable love track, he has created a full length Entertainer that brings chuckles at regular intervals, puts you in good spirit and helps you leave the Theatre without sense of guilt…… Paisa Vasool !. …… You get what you hoped for…..A Clean Entertainer that makes you laugh without resorting to Vulgar slapsticks that has become the norm for Comedy capers in Malayalam! Time Pass, Feel Good Film, …..This film falls into the Category of well made Feel Good Entertainers like Salt & Pepper, Neram, Da Thadiya…..If you have not enjoyed the films mentioned above , Om Shanthi Oshana is not your cup of Tea!
The Empty Hat
The Biggest drawback of this Movie is the predictable, less dramatic love track that constitute the water – thin plot of the film!....If you are a serious film watcher, you are kept reminded of the silly plot here and there in second half…The two songs that come in the second half does not help it either! Now a days, many film makers of new generation are obsessed with small, trivial plot and try to make them a watchable flick (Ashiq Abu, Alphonse Puthran & now, )…..Is this a sign of Lack of Confidence from their part?.....But, it can be forgiven, taking into account the need for a early breakthrough in the beginning of their career!.......This weakness in the story line is the only drawback of otherwise well made “Om Shanthi Oshana!”
The Magic Recipe
According to Lalettan, successful movies have a magic recipe!........If that is true, with what magic did the director pull off an enjoyable movie from a mediocre story?.......He covered the drawbacks of the story line by introducing the refreshing concept of girl chasing her lover……..This marked a welcome change from usual hero oriented flicks & this concept was implemented to perfection by talented Jude Antony Joseph with impressive Music (including BGM) from Shan Rahman, telling Generation gimmicks…..plenty of humour…..and of course, Nazriya!
The Bold Concept
It was quite bold and innovative from the part of director to introduce the refreshing concept of a girl chasing a lover in a fun based entertainer…..This is what distinguish this movie from other entertainers!.....It was a gamble Jude Antony took and it came out very well…. This marked a welcome change from usual hero oriented entertainers (for example : Typical Dilip Entertainers)…..The success of the film owes a lot to this bold concept!......The film covers the life of the lead lady from her childhood to youth and the whole story is told from her perspective…..Hats Off to Jude Antony!
The hero (Sorry, Heroine)
As you all know this is a female oriented movie…….Unlike past melodramatic female oriented movies like 22 FK,Kannezhuthi pottum thottu, Artist etc, this is a fun film and the onus was on Nazriya to deliver the goods….To my utter suspense, she pulled it off with ease!......The character of girl chasing her lover demanded some appealing eccentricities, charm and screen presence….After a long time, (since Revathi,Urvashi & to some extent, manju warrier) I saw a heroine sprinkling humour on screen and make you chuckle!
Music is the King!
In this film, music, especially Back ground music dominates the all proceedings…..One word : Brilliant!...In plenty of the situations, it is the BGM that lifts the movie to comic heights!....It makes you laugh at least in half a dozen situations………Film begins with a peppy nursery rhyme and ends with it that sums up the mood and sets up the tempo of the movie…… After Usthad Hotel, Music again plays a pivotal role in the success of the film!
The Humour
The sarcasting laugh against the No Smoking Ad in the beginning sets the tone and mood of the film and tells you what to expect from the film……It also tells you something about the comic imagination of the film maker!......The Viva –voce scene, Pennu kanal scene, battle field scene, Nagavalli scene, Aduthoma scene, Veega land scene………I am tired of mentioning all scenes…..You get some genuine Humour situations well conceived by film maker!.....You will laugh!, I Bet!.....
Superb Direction with New Generation gimmicks
This is where the director really scored …….The voice-over narration throughout the film (sometimes, annoying) used to good effect…..The casting was superb & Renji Panikkar was the surprise package!.......It was bold from the part of director to cast Renji in a comic role….That worked!.....Special Mention should be made to performance by Nivin Pauly, Vineeth……….But, Laljose was just OK ….felt unnatural and artificial!..... As usual with New generation films, popularity of Superstars Mohanlal & mammootty are exploited…..The nostalgia of malayalis for past childhood experience also has been made use of…..(Doordarshan, Prathikaranam programme,Shaktiman serial, Release of Narasimham, Niram,Raja manikyam, internet café, Nokia phone…list is endless)….The Songs were appropriate in the first half (Songs could have avoided in second half) …The director seldom allows you to think and keep you engaged with humour throughout!....Overall……….very impressive!
My Verdict
Enjoyed it!..........You will laugh!........That’s sure!............Come with Pop Corn & Leave with a Smile!......Have a nice time with family, kids & Popcorn!
Rating
3.75/5…..for clean, vulgar free genuine Humour!
